I've had the camera in the closet for a while but took it to the track to get some video of the kids racing their quads. Last week I couldn't get the MBP to even recognize that something was plugged into it. After a little research I found out I needed to use FireWire and had to buy a 400 to 800 cable. Well I got the cable and tried again today with no change in status. I rechecked the settings in the camera, double checked the plugs but no luck. Any ideas short of throwing the camera away? ;)

On a side note I can't even get the Sony software to install even though it is Mac compatible. I guess its made for an older OSX version or something.

I've had this same problem with many of my camera's. When you plug it in, try many different combo's of plugging it in; i.e. plug the cable into the camera first and then plug the cable into the computer, and if that doesn't work, plug the cable into the computer first and then plug the cable into the camera etc. And try to find the right combo that works for your camera. Yes, I know, a bit tedious but it will work. ;)

You might want to turn the camera off and on while doing the steps I showed above, and see if that works. ;)

Its a Sony dcr-hc42, I have the newest OS updates and iLife 09. I think its just a compatibility issue with the camera based on what I've been able to find.

Make sure the capture setting on the camera match those of the program you trying to run it with. (like DV capture to DV footage in the camera or HDV capture to HDV footage in the camera) Then give the program a restart and see if that helps.

At least this is what happens with final cut pro. I don't know it would be the same thing with Imovie.
