Curious as to what you guys want to know. Yeah it's not my laptop, but I get to take it apart, and put in a 200GB 7200rpm drive, and install everything etc etc...

    Anyway, here's the spec:

    2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Res WS --- 1920x1200 matte LED!!!
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    250GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm -- upgrading to 200GB 7200rpm Hitachi
    SuperDrive 8x DL
    512MB 8600 GT

So.... let me know what you want to know. I have the system in sig and can do comparisons etc, and take pictures blah blah!

    Ask away. :)

I'd like to know how much better the LED lighting makes the 17 inch look and if it's even. I'd also like to know the real world difference between the 256mb and 512mb GPUs.

Where on earth do you get your opinions?

They can run crysis on medium with a 1280x800 res.

They can run Crysis at medium-high settings with acceptable frame rates.

    Yeah? Well your face SUCKS!

But seriously, I have heard there is little difference between them performance wise because the GPU is unable to take advantage of all of the memory.

    Hi,
I'd like to know whether or not the LED backight has an impact on viewing angles, compared to the standard backlit screens. I've read somewhere that screens with a LED backlight in general are supposed to have a yellow tint when you are viewing from the side, even at an rather slight angle (not so good, if more than one person sits in front of it, viewing photos). Pictures would probably say more than words ;-)

Wow, I took this puppy apart, put in the 200GB 7200rpm upgrade, installed Leopard, and...this is a crazy nice system. I really prefer the upgraded keyboard shortcuts as well. And the screen is REALLY white, especially in comparison to my 15.4" MBP. My screen now looks yellow by comparison. I've taken a ton of pictures, and as soon as I've had more time to put it through its paces, I'll stick up a review with lots of piccies. :)

That's intersting news! And yes, just the pics would be nice, but I /can/ wait for the full story :D Don't hurry, just put it well and keep us updated! One thing comes to mind: have you tried calibrating/to set both screens (yours and the 17" one) to a similar appearance? I'd assume they may need different profiles, since these screens possibly are from different manufacturers; have you already checked who's the supplier of the screen?

I have not calibrated yet. I mean to do that later. My 15.4" is an LG, and it's not color calibrated. I should have it done on Wednesday since my Huey Pro will arrive then. I'll have a better idea of colors after then. But...mm....the real estate on the 1920x1200 is stunning. :D

Really? The 17" LED is not yellowish and the 15.4" LED is?

Correct. The 17" has a pinkish cast toward the top of the screen. So looking at white at the bottom of the screen, it's very white, and then toward the top of the display it's quite pink actually. Noticeably so. I've taken quite a few pictures, so I hope to have a full review up in the next day or two.

Thank you. 512mb for a 8600gt? Can we say MARKETING? I'm sure that the people who rush out to buy the new 17" mbp b/c of the 'upgraded' gfx are the same kind as those who buy 512mb x1600se cards for their desktops.

I agree. 512MB = waste of time. However, if you want a 17" MBP, you don't have much choice now.

I don't have Crysis, and don't really intend to spend any time in Windows, despite it being installed. I'm not much of a gamer. Sorry. :)
