hey guys, i ran into some trouble last night with my MBP. I logged out of my user account and decided to shut it down. When i did that, the computer looked like it was shutting down, so i closed the lid. But as i was about to leave the room i noticed that the little light (in the shiny silvery thing under the trackpad) was glowing white. Usually the light turns off when i shut it down. So i opened the lid again (the screen was black) and the light went off. When i closed the lid, it came back on.

The weird part was that my MBP never really shut down, the screen was black, but the computer was on, as in it got hot, the fans kicked in, and the optical mouse i had attached was glowing. I did everything to try and "turn it on", but in the end, i had to leave it until the batteries ran out.

In the morning, when the batteries were drained, i attached the power adapter and turned it on and it was working fine again.

its working fine now, but i still have no idea what happened, and i was wondering if anyone else had experienced anything like this.

you should have waited until the machine is really off, then put the lid down. Normally if you put the lid down, this tells mbp to go sleep. So what you did is telling mbp to go shut down, then you closed the lid which tells it to sleep.
Also, unplug the battery or hold onto the power button will forced the computer to shutdown, no need to wait it to drain :)

As easyeye said, if you close the lid too soon it will try to sleep in the middle of shutting down. Next time wait, or if it happens again just hold the power button.

i tried holding the power button, several time for varying lengths of time, but nothing happened, it was as if the computer was dead, but it was actually alive...

Do you have the latest firmware? Mine had the same problem but went away when I had updated to the latest firmware - also you might want to try different settings in your system preference.
