Is it worth $30cdn for the apple brand? Or will the dynex one for $18 do? I would buy it from monoprice for $10 shipped but i need it sooner than 2 weeks. Im in Canada.

    Well spotted!

Mini Display Port to DVI is what you need. Same advice applies re. it not needing to be Apple though.

Mini display port to dvi? oh didnt even know there was such thing as mini display port.

EDIT: $35 for dynex mini display port, ridiculous! $40 for the apple one. And let me guess i need a dvi cable to go from the cable to the monitor?

Yeah I just checked and all the unibody Macbook Pros are definitely Display Port.

I just did a web search and turned up an all-in-one cable for £14 (UK), not sure what that translates to in Canada, but you can avoid having to buy an adapter & cable and just get a cable with the right ends

Ah ok thanks. Looks like the link i posted above is the wrong product description ha.

My monitor doesnt have HDMI, only DVI and VGA. So I guess i have to get 1 DVI to DVI cable and the mini display port to DVI apaptor. Right?

The older MBP came with an adapter to connect to the svga port used for pc's. Not sure if apple is including it with the new models.

Apple stopped including video cables with MBP models a while back (whether it was with the 2010 models or ones before that, I don't know). Now Apple expects you to buy all of the appropriate cables.

As previously pointed out, ALL unibody MBP models use mini display port and not mini DVI. They are two completely different standards and are not compatible with one another. The 2011 MBP models have a Thunderbolt port for outputting video bu it uses the mini displayport specs so ALL past mini displayport accessories work with it.

There is really no need to go with official Apple cables as they are expensive. I purchased a 3rd party VGA cable, HDMI+audio cable, and DVI cable along with a male to male HDMI cable all for $35 total using the Amazon Market. That was only $5 more than an official Apple cable and they all work just fine. In fact, if you want HDMI, you are required to go with a 3rd party solution as Apple does not make a mini displayport to HDMI cable.
