When using Migration Assistant between two Macs to transfer applications and data, Apple's instructions indicate you can use an ethernet cable.

Does one use a straight cable, or a crossover cable for this function?

It works quite well too. I used it when I got my daughter a iMac. I plugged in, migrated my account over and then set up her account and parental controls.
