    Hi

I just moved and (perhaps coincidentally) my Mail app can no longer send mails on my IMAP account.

Synchronising with the webmail and receiving messages works fine.

When I try to send, I get the error:

Cannot send the message using mail.messagingengine.com

I have checked and double check my email providers settings and nothing has changed. I have also tried deleting the account and creating a new one: same problem.

It took me a week to find an apartment, and this problem has been consistent in my friends place, an internet cafe and here at home.

    Any ideas!?

I am assuming you set up your smtp server correctly? (i.e. if you had set it up for the smtp server of your old isp's mail account and you moved, you'd have to change it to reflect your new one (or use your webmail's).

thanks for the response, but I don't use my ISPs email for exactly that reason, I move around a lot. So none of the details have changed...

If you have kept your messages on the server, you could try to delete the account in Mail and then recreate it. But if you have not kept your message on the server, any messages you have downloaded could be wiped out.

I think i've run into this before. If I remember sometimes certain ports are blocked ( 25 ) unless they originate from the emails web service provider. For example, Say I use verizon email, and try to connect from anything other than a Verizon broadband connection. I remember getting such an error. I'm not sure what you have. I would experiment. So you have to choose a different port like 587, or 465 with SSL. You can also try using the ISPs, or another, outgoing server. For cingular phones, I had to configure cwmx.com as the outgoing on my email. it's wacky stuff, and I hate it sometimes

are u sure about this? exactly the same settings have been working just fine for months and now suddenly dont???

My email is not provided by my ISP and I have had it for 2 or 3 years at several different houses and ISPs with no probs.

well you can try, more and more servers are blocking 25 from outside network sending for some reason. It seems to be because of spam and virus. Check with your email provider. here's a short list of some who block it

    AT&T
    MindSpring
    BellSouth
    MSN
    CableOne
    NetZero
    Charter
    People PC
    Comcast ATTBI
    Sprynet
    Cox
    Sympatico.ca
    EarthLink
    Verio
    Flashnet
    Verizon
    MediaOne

Okay, thanks man I think I am getting my head round this now. My email provider's (Fastmail) help pages had port 25 as an example, but I just I found another part of Fastmail's webpages recommending other ports, I'll give these a go :)

Thanks again, the silence here was deafening until you came along

    SMTP

    * Server: mail.messagingengine.com
    * Port: 587 is preferred (read the standards document to see why), but we also support the default port 25 and port 26 as another option if the other ports are blocked

We support encryption via SSL on port 465, as well as TLS over the any of the other ports listed above.

Many ISPs want you to use their outgoing mail server no matter what email provider you actually use. Incoming will work, but outgoing has to go through their smtp server regardless of what your email provider is. So if you are on the move a lot this can get very confusing. Email will still work fine, it's only a matter of going through the right smtp server.

If the other port with the email provider still doesn't help, try checking with your ISP what their smtp server/port/ssl configuration is and put that in Mail.app.

yA, and if all else fails, you can try forwarding to something like gmail first, then picking it up from gmail. It's a pain, but it is an option.

This stuff drove me crazy when i first encountered it.. So good luck,
    cheers mate
