I know that when you close the lid whilte on os x, it will go to sleep but what happens when you run bootcamp (XP) and you close the lid?

It will go to sleep. Go into the Power Options to customize it further if you want.

Yes, under Control Panel in Power Options you should be able to customize what your notebook does under certain events.

You don't have to be so concerned about moving a notebook these days and worrying about the HardDrive getting damaged because of it, it's rare that it happens. SMS does an excellent job.

wobble is right, actually. Though the hard drive probably won't get damaged, the computer may not go to sleep properly. I have had this happen to me on a few occasions when I did not wait for it to inform me it was asleep, and it required me to restart when I tried to wake it. It isn't the end of the world but it does make it easier when you are trying to wake it.

    I just found this somewhere (/. ? really can't remember...): http://semaja2.net/insomniaxinfo/

It prevents the macbook from sleeping when the lid is closed. You could do the same by attaching external video, kb and mouse, but I thik there might be a lot of times you just want to use the macbook as file server/itunes streamer and then this program comes in handy. Haven't tested it yet.
