The battery in my macbook does not seem to be recognised. The battery was working fine and holding a good charge when suddenly I turned it on and there was a black X in the battery logo in the top right hand corner!! Is my battery dead!! It seems strange as it was working fine!!

Thanks for the Suggestions Sam, but the battery icon still shows an X.

Call Apple. That's a dead battery. If you're under warranty, they'll replace it for free. This is a fairly common Macbook battery issue.

Well, this is simple, but did you try taking out the battery and putting it back in? Sometimes that fixes it.

I'll try to see if I can find some other solutions.

Did you follow these instructions from the second link?

    bump

Im having the same problem and tried installing the battery update 1.2, but still no good. Also tried resetting the SMU like that other article said and still did not help. Is there anything else I should try? I dont know if I can bring it in to the apple store because the warranty is already over.

If the warranty is over, Apple won't replace the battery. Go ahead and take it to the Apple Store though, see what the employees think about your issue. You can buy a replacement battery in-store or on eBay and other sites.
