My macbook averages around 50 degrees celsius with the fans running at 2800rpm most of the time. As for battery life, with wifi and bluetooth off, and screen brightness at 25%, I get over 4.5 hours easily. With wifi and bluetooth on I get like 3 hours and 45 minutes.

    I have 10.4.10, a stock 80gb 5400rpm drive, and a 2.0ghz c2d processor.

    Thank you for the reply.

Is 50 degrees celsius considered a normal temperature for a laptop ?

i would say its pretty normal, remeber this is the cpu temperature, and the faster (and more cores) they get, they traditionally tend to get hotter. my ibook also averages at around 50C (and without the fan running, go G4 )

50 C is typical for modern notebooks. Some run cooler while others run hotter. Intel specs the CPUs to run up to 100 C. Depending on the CPU it can actually throttle down in speed if the temps get too hot. That prevents any damage to the CPU.

It's pretty normal. Late 2006 there was a poll about avg mb temperatures, and about 50% voted between 50 and 70 degrees. The rest was higher, with only about 18% or so lower. Here is the link:

Edit: not the most scientific poll, but you get the idea.

Yes, 50 C is pretty average for notebooks with Core 2 Duos now. Don't worry about the temperature being fatal; the Core 2 Duo chips can withstand well over 100 C without being damaged.

I'm currently running my MacBook fans at 3600 RPM, and its averaging 40 C.

That's a bit high, passive101. 62 C at default fan speed is average, but since you went to 3200 RPM, then 62 C is a bit high. What are you currently running? Remember to note if you are watching a YouTube video, for example, because that drives up the temperature too.

I have firefox open, adium, and skype, smc fan controler, weather dashboard, radar in motion dashboard, calendar dashboard. I closed firefox to clear it's cache and only this page was open.

I just set the fans to be at 1800 and they won't go under 2600 rpm. Do I have a problem?

Hmm, well, its not too much. 62 C for 3200 RPM is a bit high. I recommend you restart the Mac; sometimes the CPU gets worked up for no reason, and restarting it will stop the CPU from doing that.

I will try that now and see what it does.

Is 1800 the stock speed? I'll set the fans to that and see what it does.

Yes, 1800 RPM is the default fan speed for the MacBook.

I'm heading to sleep now :p. I'll respond to this thread in the morning. G'night!

I would suggest downloading iStat Pro. It is a widget that will allow you to monitor what processes are running and how much CPU they are using. If you notice your fan running or the CPU temp running a bit high you can check out iStat to see what the offending app is.

1800 RPM is the default fan RPM. The fan speed will increase as the CPU temp increases.

I set my fans to 3611 (haven't figured out how to get it to even numbers. If I move it a little bit it moves alot)

My temps are at 55-57 C at 3611 with only firefox, adium and skype running.

Double click the number and it will let you type in a value. I'm hovering at about 55*C with the fans set @ 3200RPM. At default values it was up around 60-65.

Once again, passive101, it does depend on what you're running on Firefox as well (or any other browser, for that matter). For example, going to a website with heavy Flash integration will heat up the processor, and watching a YouTube video will as well. These are all factors to consider in reading the temperature.

I only went directly to this page. The heat is not dangerously high or anything and when I do play wow it works just fine for that to so it's not hurting any performance. I think mine just runs a little bit higher.

On a table mine (2gz core2duo + 80gb 5200rpm drive) runs at 40-46degrees and fans at 1800rpm.. that's with Firefox (2tabs open, this site an yahoomail so nothing too intensive), Neo Office and iTunes running. The current ambient temperature is about 18degrees.
