So I just installed 2gb of Transcend JetRAM (link at the bottom) and after surfing a macbook at the apple store which had 1gb of ram installed, I can definitely tell that my macbook isn't as fast as the one in the store. Is this odd or is it just me? I know the ram is installed correctly and the mac reads the memory properly (I also ran hardware diagnostics and the ram checked out ok). My laptop is great so far...idles around 25 celsius and maxes out in the 50s, but I'd like to get this ram issue resolved. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Wow 25C. That's pretty low.

It might get be your imagination, did you check how much ram was in the one at the store?

Yeah, the ram in the store is definitely 1GB, I checked in the tab system hardware info and the "about this apple" tab. It's not that it's going slow or anything...it's definitely faster than the initial 512mb but the one at the store was loading apps much faster. It takes about 6-8 seconds to load Word compared to the 2-4 seconds it took in the store. Another good example is the fact that I have about 8 widgets on my dashboard and when I press F12, it takes about 8 seconds for all the widgets to load up. I'm running memtestosx right now just to double check but everything seems to be checking out ok.

Ah, heres a little thing I noticed.

For example I can open an application and exit out completely, and like 10 minutes later open it again, and it opens MUCH faster than it did the first time.

Its kind of weird to explain, but thats just how it is. You just gotta remember that the one at the store is constantly being opened and exited.

Eventaully the information is still left in cache.

Try it yourself, open something and exit it, and come back in a little bit later, you'll notice it opens faster the second, third, fourth etc. time after.

Yes, I have noticed that with apps and I hope that's how it really is because it just amazed me how **** fast everything was in the store

I wouldn't be too concerned about it, you said your memory checked out so its all good.

It is not weird to explain, you just did it. The app simply stay cached. In fact, with Rosetta apps, OS X will even cache the PowerPC instructions themselves - so lets say you first open MS Word and afterwards open Photoshop. Assuming both use the same set of instructions, Photoshop will startup faster because the instructions are already cached.

As for Jeebo's RAM, it is indeed puzzling. Perhaps the one in store had lower latencies, who knows.

I'm not a Mac user, but from past experience with them, I also believe that it does a little bit of setup the first time you open an App to prepare for running. Since there isn't a true install process for most Apple Software, things like creating Library entries need to happen on the first application launch.

I put 2gb of transcend jetram in my new macbook last night, and it is blazing in windows and osx. In windows I was running a multisession in adobe audition with over a dozen clips, and live effects proccessing and it runs great. Neither the ram nor the processor even sweat it.

Yeah I agree on the 25C thing too, I'm still having a hard time believing it.

Is there a screenshot button on the mac? I'll upload a pic to show you. When I had the stock ram it idled around 25 celsius and coreduotemp/istat nano showed the operating frequency as 1.5ghz and now with 2gb of ram it idles b/w 27-35 celsius at the same operating frequency. Maybe one of the newer updates underclocked the cpu when it's not being heavily tolled.

No, it always did that. I would like to see one of those newer (not yours!) Macbook dissassembled, they might have changed the heat pump engineering.
