I plan to take my Macbook in my travels at work and school.

I wonder if the Macbook is sturdy enough to be stuffed in a travel bag without having to worry about damaging it.

Yes, it will be fine. Most laptops should be fine as well, if not I wouldn't buy it .

Its interesting...the MacBook Pro is better built in my opinion, but the thickness of the MacBook (as opposed to ultra thin MBP) does protect the MacBook more.

I disagree that the MBP is better built. Plastic is more brittle than aluminum. By common sense, isn't polycarbonate plastic above aluminum in the hardness scale? I'd rather have something crack rather than dented. The aluminum is nicer looking though.

From my experience - i have seen too many Macbook's Pro, that were damaged in very little time.
The problem is that keys are touching screen and if you do not put anything between keybard and screen - when carrying around in a backpack or briefcase - screen would get damaged very quickly.
Also they are very think and pretty flexible (if you would compare to thinkpad or hp professional series). That does not help either. They seem to be sturdy - but they are not. I have seen may that had broken screen latches or variuos other parts. If you brake thinkpad plastic - notebook is still fine - cause it has magnesium frame - and macbook is not so fine :)
