Okay so my roommate when he turns on his macbook the screen button doesn't light up. The only thing that lights up is the indicator on the side of the macbook.

We also tried to plug in the macbook into the TV and it said no signal so its most likely not the screen problem. The Keyboard cap lock does light up too.

Any idea what the problem is?

check to make sure the RAM is seated well, if not quite possibly the mainboard went.

Which MBP is it? as there was alot of problems with some of the older MBP's blowing up the GPU

Okay, best guess is the Mainboard went, does he still have Applecare on that unit or is there an Apple store nearby he can go to verify this?

but It still wouldnt hurt to pull the RAM and reseat it

Are you saying it might be the GPU?

Quite possibly and NO it is not replacable without swapping the entire mainboard.

Dumb question but does it give any of te regular startup noises?

Okay, if you have no output to external video and it gives a startup you quite probabally have a cooked GPU ..... Sorry for the bad news

I think that the GPU problems started in models in late Spring 2007. Apple has extended the warranty on GPU problems to three years but this wouldn't cover something from 2006.

Pull the Ram leave it out and try a normal power up, you should get a beep.
Replace the ram back in and try to power it up again.
That model has the ati gpu, not nvidia so it is not a normal know gpu problem

If the side/front led is on, i am thinking it maybe stuck in a sleep mode of sorts.

try hooking it into a monitor with the DVI port if this is really a Macbook Pro.. which I don;t think you ever said what exact machine it is... and I mean a real monitor with that kind of connection, not a TV or other weird adapters.

This alone would lead me to think that his pro was a tad newer model with the 8600gt GPU and not the ati
    Nonetheless, excellent news
