    Macbook Pro runs hot

    I have an i5 2.53 15" Macbook Pro and it runs a lot hotter than my old core 2duo. I have it on my lap for around 20mins and it burns. Is it a normal problem or something i should bring to the Genius Bar?
    BTW i swap in my old 256 ocz vertex from my old MBP, not sure if that is the reason why it runs so hot

    it can warm up, yes. if it's too hot for you, either open your legs up a bit (it's the back center that's the hottest part) or get something to sit between your legs and the laptop.

    I went with the later and have used similar for all of my laptops for almost a decade now.

    Might try using smcfancontrol to increase the fan speeds to keep it from getting quite so hot.

    Smcfancontrol will do a good job. You can try increase the fan rpm but its going to be some noise :). A question, there's no ventilation in macbook Unibody. Where does the heat escape? if the fan keeps blowing inner body. Heat transfers out aluminum body easily but it wont be efficient without ventilation.

    there is ventilation. take a look at the hinge area(flip it upside down to get a better angle).

    turn the fans way up and you'll feel the air blowing out of the back.

    Running with the screen opened too far can lower air flow and create more heat build up. Running with the screen closed can do the same thing because almost all the hot air goes up between the screen and keyboard... best to run it with the screen near to straight up.

    It has to do with the unibody aluminum.

    I have HTC Legend which is made the same way MBP is, even with little load it runs hot.

    Best way is to "unload" it a bit, just close unneeded programs, and if that doesn't work, try cleaning the fan.

    You can also switch to integrated graphics if you are using OSX and do not need the horsepower.

    I have the i7 quadcore and my fans rarely can be heard.

    CLEAN YOUR INSIDE, serious, just cleaned mine, it went from 150F idle to 100F idle.
