1st? What were you doing? Something really strenuous for a Mac?

Like... Having it run Solitaire in Parallels? :p

I know I should say something witty, but...

This shows why macbook pros should have fans.

    Came up with something!

Are you sure it was the laptop, and not your hand that gave the burn?

notice that they advertise it as a notebook and not a laptop.

Had you burnt your lap with a hot cup of McDonalds coffee....... ;)

I am actually serious. I am playing World of Warcraft with it. It was hot, but not so bad, but overtime, it turned my skin red and then dark brown with similarity to getting a bad sun burnt. I will survive. I just found it funny about hearing about it so much and it finally happened to me.

I know it is a notebook, but I just found it funny that it would get that hot. When I first heard it, I thought that it was an overstatement. But now I know that it can happen.

I like Mac, but I won't drink the cool aid. It is a good notebook, but it shouldn't get that hot.

They never skimp on design. That's what sells. They do however always skimp on engineering - probably because they let the prima donna designers dictate it. Just as well most of their clientele are clueless enough and totally steeped in the 'Apple thing' not to realise it.

See most people don't want 2 inch thick notebooks. They only way to keep a thin powerful notebook cool is to make it thick.

Portability, that's what they were made for. Not some one to use on there lap because they are to lazy to sit at a desk.

While most laptops work just fine on your lap, there are the odd ones which may cause issues. Regardless, using a laptop on ones lap has no bearing on whether the person is lazy or not.

you can use a macbook pro on your lap!

you just can't have the gpu and processor running (playing a game) and expect it to stay super cool.

browsing the web, music, etc. is all acceptable "laptop" use.

Apples have always been known to run hot especially when running a software disk. Consider some type of cooling pad?

Just to be clear, are we talking about the late 2008 models here? I'm concerned because I'm a prospective buyer and the thing I hate most is overheating. I was told that the new model would be on par with their Windows counterparts - maybe not as cool as ThinkPads, but...

If it makes you feel better, ALL my laptops (see my sig) gets quite hot at the bottom part, so much so that it made me very uncomfortable using it on my lap. Haven't got burn yet...

Even my Asus EEE 1000H gets super hot at the bottom....

The solution? I use Belkin Laptop Cooling Pad. Read the review here: http://www.everythingusb.com/belkin_laptop_cooling_pad_13845.html

Before you are calling people name, just ask and you shall receive. ;)

i was gone for most of the weekend, but here is the picture of my left lap.

It is just a first degree burn, not too bad, but it is just funny that all these times, I thought that people was just exaggerating. Keep in mind it was not that bad and this picture is taken two days later.

Here is what mine is currently running at, it's running a little warm because I have a 24 inch monitor connect.

What happen you were using it on your lap and it started feeling hot so you were like "hmmm its getting a little warm, but whateva" 5-10mins later..."Its starting to burn but whateva" another 5-10mins later..."*sniff sniff* is someone cooking something? OMG! 1st degree burns on my lap!?!!"

    -or-

Or was it more like "I'm at my desk working and I think I'll just use my laptop on my lap...OMG! that thing is hot = 1st degree burns" ???

I think what people seem to not understand, is that there is a difference between overheating, and the laptop just getting hot.

If the laptop overheats, it would normally shut down/restart inorder to save its parts.

If it doesn't turn off, it's just getting hot. The MBPs are metal, metal conducts heat, thats one of the design features, and if the laptop gets hot that makes sense.

I havn't seen too many people actually having overheating problems, with the new MBPs, its usually people upset that its running a little hot.

As for cooling pads, I've heard in the past that the ones with fans and so forth don't work that well with the MBPs. It seems that ones that are made out of metal, seem to help conduct the heat from the laptop onto the cooling pad. Their are a few out there that did this in the past.

And lastly, if you want to keep it in your lap and still game or something, just put a notebook under the laptop. I used to play bioshock, quake 4, and doom 3 all in class, and I'd have it on my lap with just a notebook to keep cool.

I was like a slow warming to heating sensation and before you realize it, I got burnt. It is the same as the saying "Put a frog in a boiling water, it will jump out, but if you slowly heating the water, it will be cooked alive."

To all of the fanboys, I like Mac, however I just simply pointed out what happen and call it for what it is. It surprised me because I thought that people was just talking craps. Until it happened to me. I won't do it again and I probably will buy another Mac, but it won't be the new alubook or new macbook pro.

I am not talking about using it for TRAVELLING.

When I am in office, I put it on a desk, not my lap. When I actually sit at my home on the couch, I DO use the cooling fan for stability.

Even when I am siting on a desk at my home, I use that because it tilted the laptop slightly, better for typing.

But seriously guy, many laptops that I know of get hot after a while. At this moment I have 6 laptops and the oldest one is only 4 eyars old. THe rest are quite new and ALL of em gets hot after a while. It maybe not TOO hot, but your lap is slowly getting cooked anyhow. I NEVER use a laptop on my lap for more than 30 minutes, it just too uncomfortable.

Why don't get one of those travelling (collapsible) lapdesk?

IT's a toaster. THe super thin design of Apple's Notebooks get hot. It's the cost you pay for having a beautifully slim notebook. Just buy a cooling pad for it.

There's a reason why these companies call them Notebooks now instead of Laptops. They even warn you not to use them on your laps.

Why do people game while resting the notebook on their lap? Seriously. If you are playing TF2 or something like it, I assume you would be wanting to use a mouse, on a table, sitting in a comfortable chair.

My current notebook (an Asus) gets hot enough to burn me (hard drive goes to 60C+). Since I bought a cooler for it (Zalman NC-1000) I have had no problems with the heat generated.
