    Hello,

some time ago I read on this forum about heat problems with the MBP. Somebody was brave enough to open his MBP and saw that the cooling paste was put horribly. Is that issue already resolved?

About the LED display on the 15", does it support 16.7 million colors. Couldn't find anything about that yet. ANybody knows?

Are there any other issues with the new MBP I should be aware of?

    Thanks,

    Chris

The heat problems were worse with the original Core Duo MBPs. Since then there have been two revisions (Core 2 Duo, and then the Santa Rosa update) and most issues with the MBP have been fixed.

Whether the MBP still has bad thermal paste application, hard to say, but for the heat issue I wouldn't worry about it.

And I don't know whether the display supports 16.7 million colours...but it is gorgeous, when I see it in stores.

Other than that, you're pretty well set!

Dont worry about the heat issues, they have been fixed. While the MBP does get fairly warm, as with any other laptop, its not too the point where it gets uncomfortable.

Nah, don't worry about it...my macbook pro gets warm like any laptop but it's never uncomfortable...either way you shouldn't use it on your lap anyways!

It does get very hot when under heavy load (playing games)... or at least mine does. Not just "warm" but the area over the keyboard gets VERY hot.

True, it will get hot when you put it under heavy loads, but unless you put it under heavy load all the time, it will be fine.

I heard it was only the case that gets hot because aluminum gets heat faster then plastics the MBP insides have the same or a little more temperature.

Yes that's what I heard also. It's supposed to draw heat out of the internal components more efficiently to help them cool off.

Its not that bad. As long as you're not using it on your lap wearing shorts ;).

Most notebooks get really warm nowadays anyways. Its not a surprise.

i agree with sam. it isnt that bad... i use my mbp on my lap often and it is rarely uncomfortable. i guess they fixed the heat issue to a certain extent because my mbp is no warmer than an hp laptop when used... except when gaming of course!

If money and portability were no issue, would you get a Mac Pro or a Macbook Pro?

Depends on what you do, first of all the MBP does not have the same amount of power that the Mac Pro poses and if you are allways at home or at the office never moving your computer the Mac Pro is what you are going to need. If you want power but you move around a lot you should get a MBP.

Mac Pros are nice machines, but honestly, unless you are really using the Xeon's to their fullest, you won't even notice the difference between their performance and a MacBook Pro's and the GPU's offered in a Mac Pro are pretty much rubbish currently, except for the Quadro, which most people have no use for.

Clearly if money and portability were no issue, I would go with a Mac Pro. I would also couple it with a 30" ACD. Unfortunately, most of us don't have those luxuries.

If money were no issue... I'd obviously go for a fully loaded $18,000 Mac Pro. I mean, if money isn't an issue you can easily get that AND a $3000 MBP right? ;)

Hmm, as no one seems to have answered the screen question...

No, it doesn't support 16,7 Million colours. It, like all other laptopscreens on the market, supports 16,2 million colours achieved through dithering (they're 6-bit, 256k colour, TN panels). The last true 8 bit panel was one of those in the Thinkpad T60.

That's not to say that the screen is bad. It's, IMO, one of the best screens on a notebook, especially the matte one (no glare).

put a matte screen in the sun or under a bright light and tell me there is no glare, it is actually usually worse because with a matte screen the glare completely obscures the screen, with a glossy screen, you don't get any glare you just get reflections, which are much less obtrusive.

oh yeah, glare =/= reflections. I blame me being swedish :D. I still prefer the matte MBP screen, though I prefer glossy laptop screens in general (unless it's IPS or an IPS derivative).
