I recently purchased Corsair 4 GB ram with CAS 4-4-4 latency from Amazon for $69.99. I really feel that my computer start up faster (about 5-7 secs faster) and various programs also start up faster. I upgraded from 2 GB Sumsung CAS 5 memory (from Mac). I am in the progress of writing my dissertation, therefore I usually open 6-8 programs and go back and forward with large files on the clipboard. 4 GB ram is really a big help.

May be it is just all in my head, but hey $69.99 ain't that expensive.

Here is the link to the memory.

I'm pretty sure it's just in your head. Booting up will be limited by hard drive speed. I've seen benchmarks with desktops comparing budget 200mhz (2.5 3 3 7) memory to some high speed TCCD running at 300 mhz (2.5 3 3 X) or BH5 at 265 mhz (1.5 2 2 X) and the difference in performance in real life tasks amounts to about 1 percent. I have also done some memory overclocking of my own and have not noticed a difference. Even though the above examples are about DDR1, DDR2 will tell the same story.

I did the low latency upgrade and didn't notice much of a difference, if any, other than that made by 2 GB to 4 GB. Individual applications that are bandwidth intensive may show a difference but I don't know that I'd be that sensitive to 1 to 3 percent subjectively. Benchmarks would be a better indication.

extra memory is really nice, especially if you are doing VM stuff.
