Finally got my Macbook Pro. Switched over from a Clevo 5796 so its a big change in terms of laptop. I am loving this right now. Getting all my apps and stuff installed.

A few questions I had, are there any programs that lets you monitor the GPU and apply some changes to it in Mac OS x?
Which Media player do you guys recommend? I used to use GOM Player over when I used windows, VLC is sort of like that but lacks many features that GOM had, and the interface sucks. Is the temperature that is shown in SMCFan control the temp of the whole laptop or just the processor or graphics card? Does SMC automatically change the fan speeds for you or do you have to change them yourself when you are doing a graphics intensive task?

You can use VLC player or Mplayer to play all your vids. Also you can try the plex player if you want to hook it up to an hdtv and target a folder for all your dvd/bluray movies while using the apple remote to control everything. This is what I do with my mac mini and it works like a charm.

There are no apps to monitor your gpu except temperatures with istat pro for widgets.

What do you mean monitor the GPU, make what kind of changes? Download iStat menu and iStat pro http://www.islayer.com/apps/ it will show you temps for every sensor that is in there. SMC shows CPU temp, No SMC does not auto adjust, it is meant for manual operation.

I use VLC for movies and that's it, iTunes for music.

Something to work with the Voltages with the GPU in OS X Like Rivatuner or ATI tool in windows.

    1. Sorry, but there's no program for that. There is an application called CoolBook that allows you to undervolt the CPU, but not the GPU. It will lower the temperatures quite a bit. ;)

    2. I use VLC, but I have heard very good things about MPlayer and it's capabilities. ;)

    3. The temperature in iStat Menus shows the CPU temperature. ;)

    4. Naturally, the fans will start up without SMC depending on how hot the computer is, and how much CPU is being used. ;) But you can change it manually with SMC with a slider tab, and you can also set specific profiles, such as a high rpm profile and a default profile. :)

Yeah, I was pretty scared when I first got mine, but it was fine. ;)

Just got finished installing Bootcamp with windows xp. Xp seems to be a bit more sluggish when doing many tasks at once compared to os x. Also i was wondering back at school on the iMacs, whenever you restarted your computer a screen would pop out asking you whether you wanted to boot into Windows or OS X, how were they doing that?

I've also noticed that torrent speeds are really slow on the mac side, I have no idea why. If i got VMWare Fusion, would i be able to use the torrent on the window side and save it on my mac osx partition?

Where would i get the latest bootcamp updates, im using utorrent. The CD that came with mines has leopard 10.5.6 so I would assume that it has the most recent updates?

On your MBP, you can hold down the "option" button after you press the power button to startup your MBP & you'll get the screen to allow you to choose OSX or BootCamp partition to bootup.

Not sure if i want to go with the invisible shield or the clear speck shell to prevent scratches. Oh and this keyboard is really nice. It is a bit different from the white macbook keyboard.

Have you considered both the invisible shield and the speck shell? I am still considering this option lol...

Oh I also prefer Bodyguardz to Invisble shield. The final applied product looks a lot nicer from BG than IS. IS's quality has gone down since I started using their products almost a year and a half ago.

Seems like you have to tweak some of your firewall and network settings. I hate using torrents because you have to open ports and things on your computer/router to get the best results.

Well the thing is I dont know what firewall settings if any on mac osx that I have to tweak? the ports and the stuff are the same for os x and windows. So its not a router issue. When i open both utorrent in osx and windows side by side utorrent in windows is almost twice as fast most of the time. I've tried transmission still slower than utorrent in windows to :/

So far the macbook has been amazing. Transferred all the files over from my old white macbook and its been a breeze. Love how light and easy to carry this thing is. No more 9lb clevo!! And its quiet to, cant hear the fans at all.
