    Hi there,
I've been keen on a MBP for quite a while now but find it too expensive to afford. Therefore I am in need of a cheaper alternative.
Basically what i want to use it for mainly is schoolwork. I occasionally game but i still want good performance.

You'd be better off asking in the "What Notebook Should I Buy" section, and fill out the form. That would help us help you a ton better.

An alternative would be the $999 White Macbook. The only thing it doesn't have is an SD card reader.

How about this as an alternative way of asking:

If you couldn't have an Apple laptop what laptop would you go for? I know i leave no consideration for OS, but just on a hardware level, what would it be?

HP ENVY series is the closest alternative to a MBP (and also better performing)

While the M15x is great, it just doesn't have enough battery life to be a viable machine to use for schoolwork. Not to mention it's also very close to a Macbook Pro in price.

Acer 3820T. Entry level version should be a lot cheaper than a Macbook, with decent specs:

    i3-350M/370M
    2GB-4GB of RAM
    320GB Hard Drive

Size and weight would be similar:

    13.3" Screen
    3.9lbs

Envy build quality seems to suck. Every time I go into the Envy threads, I see problems.

    Elitebook gets my vote.

It does, returned mine(after 3 orders) and awaiting MBP 15 i5 with hi-res screen and not looking back. I'll slap Win 7 on it thru VMWare or BootCamp and be good to go
