Hey, I was just curious about something. I work at a researching department at my university and I noticed a lot of people code using macs and macbooks. When I asked them why they use macbooks over windows laptops, they said that they use them because they have a nice front in with a Unix back-end. Granted, a lot of them virtual box a linux distro along with that (that multi-desktop feature seems to come in mighty handy for that). So my question is, is the macbook really that good for coding? What are your experiences with it that make it more preferable than windows laptop for such tasks?

I use Linux box for main programming, but when I need to I switch over to my iMac. Mac OS is nice in that it is Unix. Also, there are some good programs that are native to mac os x. Coda comes to mind.

But as far as how good it is, it is all personal preference. I choose my Linux laptop over my iMac any day.

I've grown fond of the QT IDE for coding. It's cross platform, but there are certain advantages to using it with OS X or linux.

In the end, there are a lot of options for coding on all major operating systems. Mac laptops are nice just for the fact that it's really difficult to find a well supported laptop with drivers on any *nix laptop.
