The problem I have, is that I do A LOT of DVD ripping using handbrake.

However, I also do a lot of travelling daily with my laptop and so am very attracted to the small lightweight macbook air!

    The choice is between a Macbook Air 1.8Ghz, 64SSD - 1300 pounds

    OR

    Macbook Pro 2.6Ghz, 7200rpm 200GB - 1300 pounds.

So they are about the same price.

Should I get the Macbook Air or Macbook Pro?
I would be doing all my ripping to an external hard drive, so space does not matter. Also I would be connecting my laptop to an external monitor on a daily basis.

Ripping on an Air would be pretty difficult. You'd need a USB port for the DVD drive, and another for the USB drive. So then you'll need a hub, which will slow both down.

    How about the Levono X300?

Why don't you get a Macbook? it has the portability and an internal drive.

Hard to say. I have a MBP and I love it.

But at the same time, since I travel weekly, I would have loved the mobility of the Air too.

    My concerns?
    -lack of USB ports
-how much speed do I lose in switching from the MBP to the Air's processor
-how much speed to I lose in switching from a 5400rpm drive that's not even 25% full to a 4200rpm drive that would be working near capacity

All questions I opted not to explore with my very first Mac so I went for the MBP over the Air
