Hey guys I LOVE ULTRA portable computers, and just got rid of my asus u6s to come back to my mbp, but i noticed that apple is selling the air for 999 (1st gen w/ 40gb sata hd) and wanted to know if anyone here has it and just hates it?

Also i want to know if this is a killer price or just avg considering the new model, specs, etc.

    Thanks

I do not have an Air or an apple laptop actually, but I do love their design.
I think it depends on what you need the notebook for. From what I've *read* it's a good machine for your basic computing needs. I wouldn't expect a lot from this machine if you were planning to do CAD work or lots of rendering.

I did see this deal and thought about it too. I eventually went to a different route since I needed a slightly more powerful machine.

If I was to stick with Apple, I think I would go for the 13" macbook though.
But then again, you did say you love ultra portables.

The $999 deal is usually for the standard RevA 1.6ghz, 2gb ram, 80gb PATA 4200rpm HD. There is no configuration with a 40gb SATA HD from Apple.

For everyday use this can be a fine machine. Its only issues are no expandability, slow hard drive, and any video will tax its capabilities (heats up, fans max out). Some folks had overheating issues, and core shutdowns in that Rev A.

My Rev A runs cooler than my MB, MBP or iMAC at a given CPU load. I've never had any issues with overheating or core shutdowns. ITs my primary machine and I just use other where I need more disk space or horsepower for ripping DVD's etc.

Its a great product if you use it within its capabilities.

For a Rev. A Air, add a $10 price of the extended version of Coolbook, a handly undervolting utility which fixes the heat problems... generally.

When it comes to pure hardware, the Rev. B is still unparalleled in the market - though Apple still hasn't said a word on the screen issues since it's release.

The refurbished original Air, undervolted, makes for quite a nice little computer. Though don't expect to run much more than Flash games... :)
