I installed toca race driver, the game worked, but the second I started playing the fans went crazy and the laptop got very hot. After 15 minutes I closed the game and simply shut the lid. The fans were still spinning eventually turning off after 30 seconds.

is it safe to close the lid when the fans are working?

Instead of turning off the computer, is it safe to simply only close the lid always and carry it around?

It should be fine. The Air was just running the fans long enough to cool the components before hitting standby. If you want to play it safe, wait until the fans stop before putting in your bag and running around (moving parts and all).

I'd even go so far as to say let the fans spin with it open still till they ramp down then close it, but either way do not enclose the laptop until the fans have stopped otherwise the heat will still be trapped in the computer.
