I'm wondering what specs for a HDD I need for my macbook. I'm assuming it's SATA I and can do 7200 RPM?

Any SATA 2.5" drive should work. You have a SATA 1.5Gbps connection, so do not bother buying a Sata 3.0Gbps drive unless it is cheaper.

Yes you can do a 7200RPM drive. I'm running one in my Mini right now. Works real slick. The chipset doesn't support SATA 3.0 so it'll revert to 1.5. If you need a lot of space, some of the newer 5400RPM drive offer good performance and cost less per GB.

I see some 5400 RPM drives from Western Digitial on newegg.com that are 160 GB. They say they are very quiet and have shock absorption.

Is one of those worth 90 dollars?

The seek times seem to be almost as quick as the 7200 drives.

I installed a 320GB Western Digital in my Macbook not quite two months ago. It works great, and I love having that much storage on my laptop.
