Is apple thinking about upgrading to the core duo 2? Or can we upgrade the macbook with a core duo 2 by ourselves.

It's my personal opinion that the MacBook will probably stay at Core Duo for quite a while since it is Apple's consumer line, while the MBP will upgrade to Core2Duo by the next MacWorld Expo, if not sooner. Right now aside from construction and form factor there is very little to distinguish the two from one another and Apple has always tried to keep a very clear distinction between their consumer and professional lines. My 2 cents.

i believe you won't be able to upgrade the cpus. if the macbook is anything like the macbook pro, the cpu is soldered to the motherboard, so you can't remove it.

This is what I've heard as well - I guess Apple really wants you to buy a new notebook if you want Merom.
