Hey, i'd just thought i'd let you guys know about my experiences with my MacBook Pro to stop or atleast alert people of the mistakes I made.

Unfortunely, i've had the misfortune of getting one the units that are making a buzzing while the cpu is idling (which is basically mostly most of the time). Also i've got a extremely annoying mooing sound coming from the right fan (which sounds like it turning on an off over and over again) whenever the laptop gets especially hot (if you've seen a macbook/powerbook you know thats not a hard feat) Anyway i've been dealing with Apple Canada for the past two months and i've been basically been given the same story over and over again how my computer is within spec and theres nothing they can do even through theres lucky people without either of these problems. So anyway i'm just given the same story everytime never really getting anywhere, just trying to escalate it higher and higher.

Anyway the moral of this story, other to give me somewhere to whine is to ALWAYS buy a laptop and especially with a MacBook Pro from somewhere with a great return policy. Otherwise you may end up like me with a lemon and a bunch of tech support people who are denying a blatent problem. :(

    Hey Zappy,
I too have those issues with my Macbook Pro 2ghz, and even though the issues are annoying I can deal with it. In regards to the buzzing noise during idle, a quick fix is to install "Xtools" from the OSX install CD that came with your computer. After you have installed this, a new preferences pane called "Processor" appears in system preferences, allowing you to turn off one core, which stops the whine. When you need the extra power of the second core you can just turn it straight back on.

    Hope that helps,
    Steve

Thanks for the reply. The problem with disabling the second core is not only are you crippling the speed of your computer but your actually decreasing the battery life (don't ask why)

Is there any way you could host and post an audio file of this mooing? I'm really curious about this crazy laptop-cow hybrid...

    =X

Anyway, sorry about your bad experience... Hopefully buy a better built laptop next time.. Hey, you could even fill out the FAq, post it here and we could find a good one for you.

I thought this is the best solution so far?
    1) Start the mirror widget
    2) Close the mirror widget
    3) Put the MacBook to sleep
    4) Wake the MacBook up

The why is likely that the CPU has to run at full speed more since it only has the one
core working. At idle, single core mode probably lasts longer, but with any multitasking
or multithreadedness going on at all, the dual core could easily be more energy
    efficient.
