run the command below in terminal , it`s the OS-X built in cleaning and optimization software , but if you do not leave you mac on over night it will not ever be run.

Also you can run disk utility to verify your file structure , and do a disk check at the same time.

" sudo periodic daily weekly monthly" do not include the quotes , it will ask for your password , all you will get is a flashing cursor, wait for it to finish, you can google the command if you are worried.

just type terminal into spotlight, the magnifying glass at the top right corner of the screen.

Then once terminal is running type "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly" , and press enter.

To get disk utility , just do the same but type "disk utility"

Just run the above once a week, you dont need to leave your mac running 24/7

Maybe it's not your computer but more your internet connection?

You said you emptied history and cache...does that mean only safari is running slow? If it is then check your internet.
