    Hi there,

I have decided on going with the MBP. I currently have an IBook G4 and desperately need to update it to suite my needs for Masters work in Architecture. I rely on 3D modelling and photo editing softwares and think the MBP would be good for running such programs. So, my question is - should I just break down and get the MBP now or wait till October for when the (rumoured) updates are coming? Leopard would be nice to have, and so would the touchpad gestures, as used in the iPhone. Any other possible hardware updates? Or am I just hoping for something that likely won't happen

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

Uh... get a computer when you need it, not when it is in style. The MBP just got updated a matter of weeks ago too. So uh... just get it.

The MacBook Pro will most likely not be updated in October. The updates in June were pretty significant and updates for it won't come until January or later, in my opinion. The MacBook will probably get an update in October, though.

If you desperately need it don't wait. Get the MacBook Pro now. Leopard will just cost $129 US when its released (even cheaper with Student Discount, which you qualify for).

    Thanks for the input!

Plus, I can get a free Ipod if I buy it now too, I suppose :)

While we're on the topic - it terms of its most recent upgrades, how does it fare with the new NVIDIA graphics card? I am considering just getting the base model with the 128mb of dedicated ram, because the next model up is $500 more. Will this card be sufficient for running applications such as Maya and AutoCAD?

    Thanks again,

Yes, it will run AutoCAD and Maya fine. 128 MB of dedicated video RAM is enough for those applications.

The base model should do fine for you. The step to 256mb ram isn't really that noticeable in what you'll be doing with it, especially coming from an iBook.

Well, maybe he's just tired of the hassle of windows? I don't even have to worry about updating a virus scanner on my mac.

fan_of_laptop: If you're only going to do research I suggest the regular MacBook instead of the MacBook Pro.

Well - I wasn't tempted by a mac until I tried installing vista... so I sort of see the reasoning ;)

After having to turn off all the options, upgrading memory and a graphics card and then having vista shut down saying I'd made substantial hardware changes and this was an illegal copy... I thought enough is enough and began looking seriously at MacOS

Oh - and the way vista locks your screen up with constant 'hello! are you SURE you want to run this? The program you use every day/the folder you want to copy/etc'?

    I love that...

will you be able to run Autodesk Software on the MBP? just curious since I use AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.....and i still have not decided because it might not work. Mind sharing the performance of the previous mac experience you had running Autodesk? Would you recommend the MBP for these applications?

    Thanks.

    Hey Lapu,

I actually didn't run AutoCAD/etc. on my iBook... had to use Windows for that. I did use all my other design software (Photoshop/etc) on it with okay results though. But now that Bootcamp is up and running, I think (from what I've ready anyways) that it should be okay. Knock on wood!

Thanks.....yeah knock on wood :D .......I'm hoping it will. I have read on another thread (different website) that Inventor did work through boot camp and worked flawless up until 2-3 months later they started to experienced Inventor to freeze and shutdown  especially on designs with multiple (50-100) components and parts.............though I can't tell how true that is, nevertheless I will still roll the dice with the MBP 17.
