I just got this, it only has 8GB ram. Can I upgrade the ram myself like in my old macbook(white plastic)?
Other then then the Retina what is different from the other MacBook Pros? Can you upgrade those?

no you cant upgrade the ram on the retina. You can only upgrade the SSD, to another SSD either from apple or OWC, the format is very proprietary atm.

Ok, I didn't know that. I am going to return it tomorrow.
How does the normal macbook pro screen compare to the retina?

Also, on the other macbook 15 pro can you upgrade ram/harddrive?

Personally, while I like the Retina display on the iPhone and iPad (I own the former, not the latter), I think it's too gimmicky on the MacBook. Applications that are not optimized for the Retina display look awful, and there's too much glare. I much prefer the optional hi-res antiglare display my present MBP has right now.

The only way you'll be able to decide is to go to an Apple store and try them yourself. All stores I've been to will have the standard 1440x900 glossy panel, which I wouldn't recommend on account of the resolution and glare. They should also have an example with the antiglare display, which I think you'll prefer. Problem is, the machines the stores stock with that display also have every other upgrade in the books. If you find it's what you want, the best thing to do would be to order it online and have it shipped either to your home or local store.

    You can do both.

to make the machines so small and light, they cannot fit in user replaceable parts... so for the most part, the way you buy the machine is the way it will always be.

The non-Retina models have normal hard drive and ram slots if you want to be able to swap stuff out... but I find that just not a big deal because the machines are so much bigger and heavier, and upgrading RAM+HDD isn't that useful if you get a decent amount when you buy the machine anyways.

the normal 13" MBP display is utter junk compared to the 13" rMBP.

Yeah I ended up getting the Macbook Pro 8GB Ram/750GB HDD + Anti Glare. After owning the retina it's nice but reading about the problems scared me away.
I hope the anti glare is nearly as nice, I am typing on a 1080 right now and ever since the retina I see pixels in ALL screens now and it bugs me LOL. Wierd.

Hi I've been shopping for a new laptop for months! Every new model seems great until you find out they've all got something wrong with their design. So, I'm thinking about a macbook pro retina, how do you guys like yours? Anybody having any major problems? Thanks!

The 1680x1050 anti-glare option on the MBP 15 is pretty nice. I'd say it's a toss-up between that and the retina because I'd most likely use the retina at an equivalent 1680x1050 most of the time (1920x1200 is just a bit too small). At the same equivalent resolution, the retina display is sharper, but I also prefer an anti-glare screen. Shame we can't have our cake and eat it too.

In the MBP 13, it's retina or nothing for me. The old 1280x800 screen looks positively awful compared to either the 13" retina or the MBA 13 with its 1440x900 anti-glare screen. The highest equivalent desktop resolution on the retina MBP 13 is 1680x1050 and it looks great to me. I found myself really liking the form factor of the retina MBP 13. If the price/performance wasn't so poor I'd be an owner.

The Air's display isn't actually matte - even Apple calls it glossy in the product description. In terms of "glossiness" I rank the systems as follows:

    Standard MacBook Pro (1280x800 13-inch, 1440x900 15-inch) >> Retina MacBook Pro > MacBook Air >> Hi-Res Antiglare MacBook Pro
