Hi, I'm thinking about getting a Macbook Pro 15.4" for college next year. Im assuming that I would be carrying the laptop around from time to time and I was wondering if anyone who has the new 2007 santa rosa macbook pro 15.4 could tell me if the 5.4lb weight is light enough to carry around. I'll be buying a messenger bag holder for it, and i sort of want reassurance that it wont be super uncomfortable.

What else will you be carrying around?

My V6 is the same weight and I carry it for about 80-110 minutes from home to school via the bus, subway and walking. I'm usually upright/standing at the time as well, so it gets heavy. I'm only using a messenger bag, a sleeve, the notebook, the power adapter(which is half a pound), a textbook, and a binder, it still weighs alot and feels uncomfortable once I reach the hour mark.

Perhaps do a test run by putting a similiar weight in a bag and carrying it around for a while.

For its size, the MacBook Pro is very light. If you must have the 15.4-inch screen, the MacBook Pro will be one of the lightest 15.4-inch laptops you find. If you find 5.4-pounds too heavy to carry, you'll have to downgrade to the MacBook (which frankly, isn't that much lighter, at 5.1 pounds).

I find that 5.4-pounds is fine to carry around. If you get a backpack for it, it won't be a problem at all. If you use a messenger bag, its kind of heavy, but not unbearable. And it depends you too, if you're small it may be harder than if you're a muscle man.

Like Sam said, get a backpack, it does wonders. You would probably hardly notice it was with you most of the time. I carried around a laptop very similar to the MBP (5.6 lbs) all last school year everywhere I went; it wasn't bad at all. I plan on doing the same with my new MBP. :)

I dunno but if you have trouble moving around a 5.4 pound notebook, maybe working out should be a higher priority than finding a lighter one.

Unless ofcourse your handicapped, in which case I apologize.

lol thanks your all quick and helpful advice....yeh i was thinking about getting a backpack, but messenger bags look so much cooler. psh airman, i can curl one alienware mALX notebook (15lb) on each arm (lol i wish i had one), so this macbook pro is no sweat. BUT, alot of reviews for the MBP say stuff like "oh its light but its not sumthing you'd want to carry around everywhere", i dont get how it can be both light and heavy at the same time. im writing this on like an 8 lb dell inspiron 9300 and i can barely pick it up with one hand.

Hehe, well I agree that messenger bags are cooler looking, but backpacks are easier to carry around though. So yeah, I wouldn't worry about the weight, the reviews say its light (compared to other 15.4-inch laptops) but not something you want to carry around everywhere (compared to a cell phone :p).

I was in a similar situation... I wanted the lightest 15.4" laptop because I hate a heavy laptop ... I've got to take mine everywhere.

Not only is the MBP one of the lightest, it's got the smallest form factor as well. You can't go wrong with a MBP.

My last laptop was same weight as MPB... I carried it in a messenger bag. After adding some paperwork and other bits and bobs it was pretty uncomfortable to carry around the city.

I know carry my MPB in a backpack and dont find it at all uncomfortable.

Agree messenger bags look 100x cooler but I am switching to a back pack!

If you're going to be using a messenger style case, you shouldn't have a problem. Just don't load down the case with accessories; that *will* cause a problem as the MBP is pretty close to the edge of comfortable travel weight (AC adapter included) and that extra CD booklet you think you just have to have will most likely push the weight a bit over the edge.

I know with my T60 (a tad heavier than a MBP), it's pretty comfortable as long as I don't try to carry my entire assortment of gadgets in the case with it. Usually I carry just the notebook, power adapter, mouse, and a mouse pad. When I had a MBP it was the same story. :)

The MBP is NOT heavy and you will not have a problem. I carried a 6.5lb Dell around in college - couldn't tell the difference between that any my 5lb PowerBook once it was on my shoulder.

get a backpack. a plain looking one. one that doesn't shout "expensive laptop over here - steal me!"

your back will also thank you. there is no way in hell any messenger bag is going to work with even a single textbook and notepad, I don't care if the laptop only weighs 2 lbs. the larger the campus you are at (and thus the further you have to walk) the more this holds true.
