My friend has a MacBook which takes 20 minutes to load the main screen. It then comes to a black screen asking for a darwin password. The darwin password has something to do with the Linux kernel right? The Mac is running OS X 10.4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Reinstall OS X.
Or, if this transfers over to OSX(like it does in unix/linux)
Does it go to a command line?
    Type : startx

But at this point I doubt this works.....

Darwin have nothing to do with the Linux kernel, darwin is the base of the OS X system.

Your friend have to reinstall OS X. Or get to Apple Store to allow them do it for you.
