I always move the file to desktop because I don't know where it's stored.

Imported photos are stored "within" the iPhoto programs itself. Applications on OS X can contain expanded data and that is what iPhoto is doing when it stores imported photos. So, unless you are deleting them from your iPhoto library after copying them to your desktop, you are ending up with multiple copies of your photos on your computer. I don't see a point in copying the photos to your desktop especially when you can easily access them through the iPhoto app or even Finder under specific scenarios.

The situation is where I want to attach a photo in an email message, and I don't think clicking on the iPhoto app while searching for photos opens up a list of photos in it, does it?

It does whether you are in the built-in Mail program that OS X has or even through Safari (not sure about other web browsers, don't use them under OS X). iPhoto is an option and that an arrow next to it. Clicking the arrow will expand all of the different iPhoto categories such as Events, Recently Imported, etc. I believe you can even drag-and-drop into web browsers (a friend says they do this with Chrome) using iPhoto. No need to hunt through anything to find the photo but rather just drag-and-drop it right into the e-mail.
Mac) How do you do where your iPhoto importation is stored?
