I have tried out iTunes and Quicktime to play my MP3s and find the interface barely acceptable.
Is there a Winamp player for Mac OS X that allows me to create a customized interface?

There is a version of XMMS for OS X, AFAIK. It is similar to Winamp (2.x). Also I found this:
http://www.macamplite.com/
and this:

not tried them though, and they seem not to be in active development anymore. Try googling, but I guess most users simply go with iTunes. -
The problem I have with iTunes is it copies the MP3s I have on my CD to my local hard drive for the iTunes library.
iTunes cannot play the files straight from a removable storage. -
Have you went through your preferences yet? There is an option to turn that off. When I put in a CD, it just plays from the CD.

Yeah, you can turn that off. And why wouldn't you want the mp3's to be on your HD?
I agree that it takes a bit to get used to iTunes, but it is MUCH better than winamp 4/5.
And much more stable than winamp 3. -
Just work with the options and you will be happy with itunes.
Mac version of Winamp?
