I was just wondering... why are those monitors so expensive? if anyone bought mac displays before... what made it different from its competitors?
anything extra ordinary about it?

They have much better contrast ratios, response times, and color definition than your average wal-mart monitor. These(as well as other high end displays) are made for artistic purposes, hence the high prices.
-
Nothing really extraordinary relative to comparable displays like Dell's comparable 20 and 30" panels, for example. Apple generally hasn't dropped the price on its displays at the rate that Dell and others do.

stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
and even with all that, i would still buy one if i had the money. i think it all goes back to that whole apple cult thing. im just a fanboy

so any recommendation for a good 22 -24 inch lcd monitor???

They just look so much better aesthetically than anything else. Also the Apple displays connect better with the Mac computers.
BTW, they are not "Mac" displays, they are just Apple displays and they connect with any computer with a DVI port. -
Anandtech did a comparison of an Apple display and a Dell one which used the same LCD panel. They found only very minor differences in picture quality. The main differences were price, aesthetics, adjustable settings, and the Apple display was DVI-only while the Dell had both DVI and VGA inputs.
Edit: Ah, here it is: http://anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2400&p=1
The review does note though that neither of these are really your average run-of-the-mill monitor, and they should both have above-average picture quality. -

Cinema Displays are a different class than the Samsung 20-inch monitor you find for $200. They are a high end display, and pretty evenly priced compared to other high end displays. With that said, if you want an external display for your MacBook/MacBook Pro you probably won't need a Cinema Display. Just get any other display.

I'm not saying Apple's displays are bad, they're just like any consumer displays out there with aluminum casing. -
I use Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW on my desktop. I compared both and I found it better than apple.

I think both the apple and dell 24 get the same exact screens from the same source. I read it in some article a few months back so it can be different now.

No, the 20" panels are identical for the dell 20" wide and the apple 20"...
The Dell step up is a 24" and the apple is a 23"... might be the same company though.
The dells have a number of additions that make it more useful, but the apple is built slightly better.
Although as a photographer the dell won, especially with its rotating abilities.
Mac displays???
