What would be the best program from creating avatars and signatures and still be able to edit photos (if one piece of software can do it). I was looking into photoshop extended CS4 extended, but the descriptions on-line are rather vague into what it can do (outside of photo editing). On the other end, Illustrator CS4 looks like it could do avatars and signatures, but I don't think it does photo editing.

So, is there such a program that can do both, or would I be better off with two separate programs? Looking for Mac programs...

The best would of course to use separate applications. But if you are after an all-in-one solution, Photoshop is usually a good choice, albeit more focused towards editing images as opposed to creating images.
    A free alternative is Gimp.

Photoshop is your best choice if you're looking at buying. The difference between PS and Illustrator is PS is a bitmap paint/edit program and Ill is a vector paint/edit program. Ill has a larger learning curve than PS. It is not about painting pixels you are manipulating vectors with path editing tools. There are a million tutorials online on how to paint and create artwork in PS from scratch and by manipulating images. IMO you will find PS much more useful for now. Trust me I used to teach both in Post Secondary. And Gimp would be a good free way to get started as well. You can also download a free trial of any Adobe product that works for a limited time.
