    Hi everyone,
I am considering buying a MacBook Pro (15") screen.
This will be my first Mac as I am currently a windows user.

    My question is:
Using Boot Camp, how is the performance when running windows (vista or xp) compared to a similar windows based laptop with similar specs?

Would running progams in OSX be faster than in vista or xp on a macbook pro?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

The speed will be the same as any other comparable laptop. The speed of programs in each OS will depend on the program. Some will be faster in OS X some in Windows, but I doubt the difference will be all that noticeable. Just use that program in whichever OS fits your workflow better.

Until Boot Camp goes final (in 10.5), there are still some oddities in Windows. Power management is not as good, for example.

Speed-wise it will be nearly identical.

    Thanks for the help.
So, it sounds like I should wait until the final version of boot camp is released?

It depends. I honestly have not use Boot Camp in sometime, but the last time I used it, it was pretty complete, except for power management. The final version will be released with Leopard in October and as a stand alone app for Tiger. So, if you can live with the little quirks for 3-4 months, there is no reason to wait.

I really do not see the point of installing windows on mac. Indeed there are some programs that are for windows only, but mac has their solutions.
I need some program called SAS, which is for windows. They stopped providing version for mac, do not know how I go through this with my future yet

basically, if you need windows, there is no disadvantage of setting up it now. When future drivers are released, they will be updated accordingly on your system. Basically the trackpad is a little wonky, and there are some power issues yeah. Expect about 2/3 of your normal run time in windows / osx. But if you are plugged in it shouldnt matter at all. And again- when it is fixed you will still get the benefit. You wont be stuck or anything.

You can use Boot Camp now. All the little bugs and quirks will be fixed in OS X 10.5.

    Boot Camp works fine.

Power management is not a disaster, but would hopefully improve over time.

I've run Vista on my MBP, and it ran great. Very fast.
