If you pre-order it through Apple, will you receive it on the 26th? Or will it be after?

I plan on getting the ADC student membership for 99 and getting leopard through that. So it'll be a week or two after it comes out.

Apple's website says, "Pre-order today and get free delivery on October 26, 2007."

And the October 16th Press Release said, "Packed with more than 300 new features, Mac OS X Leopard goes on sale Friday, October 26, at 6:00 p.m. at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers, Apple announced today. And, beginning today, customers can place pre-orders on Apple’s online store. “Leopard, the sixth major release of Mac OS X, is the best upgrade we’ve ever released,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “And everyone gets the ‘Ultimate’ version, packed with all the new innovative features, for just $129.”

Initially I was planning to wait a bit until Apple releases a bugfix or two before getting it. But that video is now making me think twice. I'm probably gonna pop down Regent Street on the 26th, and see try the OS out for myself. If I like it, it's gonna be bye-bye £58.
However, I might have to shell out an additional £xxx to buy a 500GB Firewire HD or summink just for Time Machine.
So perhaps it would be wiser to wait.
Gah, this is making my head hurt :p.

Based on the information I've read, the previous beta build (9a559) is very stable. I haven't read any reports on the Leopard Gold Master (9a581), but I think it would be fair to assume it's even more stable. If you have the money, buy Leopard on October 26th.

I was planning on waiting for the second generation Touch too...but then thinking back, I don't know if my first generation iPod Nano will last until then, and plus, waiting until next September seems too far away for me.

I'm gonna wait until they release the iphone/ipod touch sdk to see what kind of apps will be developed for it. I want to get an ipod touch but to have as a pda/media player. And without an email client and other functionality that the iphone (minus the phone) has, I dont think id buy it, especially at $399 since the 16GB version is the one I would get.

And new iMac? Awesome! I'd love to have a new iMac, but considering we just got a $6000 electric piano... :p

Yeah in both VLC and Real player. like the movie begins to play then drops frames left and right! When i move my mouse over it, it sort of catches up, but still is dropping frames and becomes really out of sync with teh sound, which btw plays fine.

I called Apple about the student ADC and the development kit for the student edition only ships with Tiger (for some weird reason). They said only the premier memberships ship with Leopard. You may want to call them to verify.

Well I was thinking about getting either a macbook, or an Inspiron e1505/1405 earlier this year before heading off to college, but then I decided to go to community college for the first year instead (will start this Jan, btw) so it gave me more time to think about what I plan to buy. I always liked the Mac OS, and even tried to convince my stepmom to get one last year, but no, she had to get a Dell!

Unfortinetly, one thing holding me back is the "bang for the buck" factor-For the price of an stripper macbook with just the default options, I could get a very well equipped Dell, Gateway, or HP with better integrated graphics (or discrete) a bigger hard drive, heck maybe even with MS Office included! ;)

Finally, one quick question for people who did Mac OS X upgrades-Does it really take around one and a half to two hours? When I upgraded to Windows XP, it only took about 45-60 min, and I didn't do a clean install, just had to uninstall a few Win 98 specific utilities.

Well, assuming you set it for Disk Usage and its recognized as an external storage device, I don't see why not. The hard drive might not spin fast enough to be able to use properly, though...so not sure.

Interesting video content-wise, but the host was lame. I swear, apple must pay their hosts to "gesticulate" (<---smart word there :D). Watch the video and look at his hands, it might just make you laugh. :p

Ok, please forgive my ignorance, but what exactly does the family pack (for $129.00) refer to? Is there something that I missed with the basic release of Leopard?

I am one of the “on stand-by" for the October 26 release people, so that I can be assured of the new OSX-Leopard install. Apple for some reason has been leaving a huge gray area for the ones who have pre-ordered with the question of…”will it…or will it not come with Leopard preinstalled?”

Ok…sorry for the rant, but I am looking verrry forward to ditching the “broken windows” for a clearer vision of what lies ahead in the Mac-World.

The Family Pack is supposed to be $199, the normal version is $129.

Anyways, Family Pack allows you to install OS X Leopard to three Macs for $199. Great deal.

    Sam,
Ok, when you say normal version, are you referring to ones with OSX-Tiger or is the $129.00 in addition the MSRP of say a MB or MBP?…

Thank you once again…and sorry for sounding ignorant.

Here, normally, OS X Leopard costs $129 per copy. However, if you have more than one Mac and you want to save some cash, there is the option to get the OS X Leopard Family Pack for a bit more ($199), but you are allowed to install it onto 3 Macs, as opposed to one-install on the $129 copy.

    Sam,

Thank you for the clarification! For some reason when I checked out the preorder screen, I could not make out what the “family pack vrs Basic” was referring to…but thank you for the quick Leopard 101 lesson!

So I am sure that I will be paying for the “family pack” for what ever pre-dates Leopard going forward and I will be sure to pass along this lesson to the next “windows-ditcher” who seems a little vague!

    Thanks again!

: DROOL : Sexyness, sexyness, sexyness.

    Questions:
    1) Do you think $129 is the final price and will be kept at that for the next 6-12 months?

    2) Family Pack: technically speaking, it doesn't have to involve a 'family' in the literal sense, does it? I mean, would it be legal to get the family pack and share it with 4 other people on this forum?

    1) Yes, $129 is a final price, and Apple doesn't normally drop its prices. Tiger was released for $129 back in 2005, and still is $129.

    2) Here's Apple's requirement for Family Pack:

You should be eligible for some pretty decent discounts since you're in school.

Install time varies from machine to machine. If you have a slow machine and do an upgrade I could see it taking a couple of hours. I had an opportunity to try out one of the final betas of Leopard. A clean install on my MB took about 15 - 20 minutes, but I did the install off an external HDD.

    Quick question:

I'm getting Leopard on the 26th - used my iPhone rebate to pay for most of it. I have a 100gb external hard drive that I use (currently) to back up videos on my Windows partition. I might need, say, 25-30gb for that purpose. I would like to be able to use the rest of the space for Time Machine on the Mac. Is that possible? Can I partition the drive and have the second partition in a different format (I asssume it would need to be FAT or HFS+, or something else?) so I can use it for Time Machine? And also, will Time Machine be okay with having an external drive with less capacity than the main HD?

Depends...OS X is pretty good at power saving.

Spaces seems cool. I didn't really care about it at first, but it seems to be pretty useful now that I think about it.
