This just popped into my head.
Does anyone think mac will make a netbook?
I think it would be a top seller if it was decently priced.
Any thoughts?
-
no, and if they did then it would cost $3500
-
I don't think Apple is going to make a netbook because they tend to stick with the high price category and doesn't look like they're going to change anytime soon.
-
I'm making that assumption based on the prices of the Asus and Acer netbooks.

Even Steven Jobs doesn't like the idea of a Mac netbook. First of all, I think that it might kill off the MacBook Air since everyone will find the Mac Netbook is easier to carry around than the Air and probably a much better value. You won't be seeing a netbook until they figure out how to a) milk you and your wallet for what you're worth and b) how to either balance the Air and Netbook or kill off the Air. -
What happened to searching before making a thread? Quite a lengthy discussion on the first thread, plus multiple discussions on MacRumors, Engadget, and AppleInsider.

macbook air? kind-of-a-netbook for ~$2000.
i guess its too powerful and too large to be in the netbook class, but its gotta be close. -
I doubt Apple will release a netbook anytime soon...although the MacBook update now allows Apple to move the MBA to a smaller footprint if they want to do so.

MSI Wind + Hackintosh.

yeah i wouldn't be surprised to see them move the air to a new chassis after about another year, so that the thing is 11 or 12" instead of 13".
-
I 3rd that!
I think IF apple decides to enter this market, it will be at the expense of the air, which has become a difficult product sell due to its price. There are a number of PC makers who plan on releasing very affordable ultraportable lappies in 2009. ASUS has the N series out now, and these blur the lines between netbook and notebook, providing a very portable laptop with enough power, hard drive space, and a full sized keyboard/trackpad that they could be used as a main machine... And they do this at a very cheap price compared to the Air.
With this in mind it will become even harder to convince people that the Air provides 3X the value. While in the past making things small=massive price increase, the market can now mass produce "small" and thus "small" can no longer support its premium status.
The logical step (as masterchief and sam suggested) would be to replace the Air with a 11-12" below $1000 ultra portable. But I don't see apple doing this for at least 6 more months... until the current Air's life cycle has run its course.

Apple already has a netbook. It's called the iphone

with a larger screen, higher resolution, and (much) faster components, you might be able to make a statement like that, but it would still be a stretch.
the internet is basically a toy on that thing, due to the slow rendering of web pages and the tiny low res screen.
but it is still freaking cool, i give you that. -
I dont like netbooks. They have nothing.. no point in getting one
-
Apple likes selling their computers at exuberant prices. Netbooks are generally considered low-cost, cheap computers. Apple might be afraid an Apple netbook would undercut the Macbook.
People would buy the Apple netbook instead for the cost, in addition to the perceived pseudo-socioeconomic/high maintenance/trendy/snobbish Apple image. -
I can see apple making a netbook, but it will not be a netbook, that is apple will take the current product and do there apple thing and release something different. Just like they did with the iphone.
If anything I can see them doing a iphone/air hybrid. It would be something that doesn't replace the mb for functionality or power.
People were worried about the mini hurting mac pro sales, but apple know's how to segregate its product line, often to well at the expense of the end user, so I sure they will be able to make a lower cost internet/email device that fits into there product lineup.
The question just remains to be seen if they will.
