Another quick question Im a student and I take a lot of online classes that requires me to submit my work online. I tried iwork 08 the trial I typed up my paper and tried to submit it but it wouldnt let me. So I copied it to the ms office 04 trial that i have, and i was able to submit it. So i was thinking about getting MS office 08 but i was reading some reviews and a lot of them say that it bugs out your mac. Overall the reviews are not very good.
So those of you that have it how is it? Is it worth getting? If not what other alternatives to I have? Thanks

I like Office 2008. Haven't experienced any significant bugs yet. I only use Word and Excel though.

I think its okay. Microsoft Office is still the de facto in the industry, and yeah, its not bad. If you need absolute compatibility, go for Microsoft Office for Mac.

But what I think was the problem was that you saved in the Pages format. Instead, under File, Export it for Microsoft Office documents. That should be fine then :).

It's actually really good. Office is one of the things that MS does VERY well.

The whole Projects thing they have going on is AWESOME. I love it.

The only problem I have is that Entourage still sucks compared to Outlook. It has no ability to sync with gmail.

I'm actually impressed by the ribbon and active graphics they have added. I think it's really cool how they now separate the L&F of their graphs from the data. HUGE improvement in usability there.

If you can get it cheap enough, pick it up!

Office has always been rock solid. Still the '08 interface takes getting used to if you're a veteran of the older versions of Office. It more streamlined, but they moved some functions around so you'll be searching some times.

Office 08 has been pretty good to me. I need absolute compatibility because my university pretty much runs on word and excel. They expect you to have it.
My only major gripe is Office 08 doesn't play well with Spaces.

I love Office 2008. I briefly (for about 3 months) used 04, and I am liking 08 much better.

While I've not used Office 08 on the Mac, I have used it on the PC and Punisher is right. It takes a bit of getting used to. Case in point it took me until the end of an 8 week course I teach to finally figure out how to start a PowerPoint presentation from the current slide and not all the way from the beginning.

That works really well. You can also export into PDF format which is handy.

Office 2008 is great. In fact, I even prefer it to Office 2007 (for windows).

I suppose the review sites don't give Office 2008 glowing praise because it's not an earth-shattering departure from Office 2004. But realistically, there is only so much you can change in Office while maintaining compatibility and user familiarity. The other major complaints were that Office 2008 lacks VBA support for macros so if you have any need for them you need to stick with Office 2004. Performance also doesn't seem to be spectacular despite being a Universal Binary, but that will probably be cleared up when the first patch comes out.

I have the Mac office 2004. Any reasons I should upgrade? Or should I just stick with 04? I'm very content with the office 2004. Any comments please?

I think you answered your own question. If you are happy with 2004 and its doing the job for you, there's no real reason to upgrade. :) Save yourself some money.

2008 is UB, so that is enough of a reason to upgrade. And the new Entourage really blows away the old version.

UB is enough of a reason for an upgrade though.

And Mac Office 2008 has full Office Open XML (.docx, .xlsx, etc.) support. No Visual Basic support though.

I think if you're okay with Office for Mac 2004, and you have no particular need or want for the Office for Mac 2008 features, it'll be fine.

As a university student too I feel like you don't really have a choice in getting Office. I'm picking it up Friday from Best Buy, $10 off plus 12% off.

Office 08 is miles nicer than 04. It's also a lot faster since it was compiled for Intel processors, unlike 04. I like the fact that when I type - the text is nice and smooth appearing on the screen in 08 vs the jerkiness of 04.

Just make sure if your handing in stuff, or sending things to other people that you save it as a .doc

With us at school, a lotta people couldn't open the new .docx that the new office saves stuff as (windows and mac). Basically because its an incompatible format with the old office. (although there are online converters for .docx for people that cant open it)

I've seen newegg.com selling 2004 for $139, but they are selling 2008 for $129. Amazon.com also has 2004, for $129. These are for the Home and Student versions
