We saw apple adding that card in the Imac not so long ago. Do you think its possible for apple to also add them in their MacBook Pro?

MBPs not running warm enough for you? ;)

The 4850s are relatively large cards, there may not be space for fitting it in, much less cooling it in that slim chassis.

In a word: impossible. MBP can hardly cool the 9600M.

.... people saying the mbp can't cool a 9600gt and alluding to it running super hot.

i'm idling on the 9600gt at 52 for the proc and 55 for the gpu. i would say the limiting factor is the size, and that the cooling of the mbp is superb.

Are you fans running at full speed? on my bootcamp, i idle at 60(Windows 7) and fans on medium. os x has a better resource management than windows. we won't see a 4850 that soon on a mbp unless apple decides to break its 1" obsession.

People should start regarding the 4850 in the same power consumption bracket as the 9800M GTX. There are so, so many reasons why the 4850 will not work.

I really cant be bothered though to list them.

absolutely correct. And it also requires much power which will cause battery life to decrease drastically.

If apple bothers with Ati again, it won't be until mid range 46x0 series has been shrinked to 40nm.

no, my fans are both at ~2000 rpm, though the cool ambient temp might be a factor. i agree that os x has better resource mgmt... when i play games on my xp partition, the fans are always full blast.

i had the same heating problem on vista....windows 7 shows a little less heating but it definitely gets hot while gaming. And yes, the temperature also depends on the ambient temperature.

My MacBook Pro will go up to 180+ Fahrenheit in OS X while I am doing absolutely nothing if the fans are at 2,000 RPM with the machine on my lap. (On a glass desk it is much cooler.) I can't even keep them at 2,000 RPM because OS X will kick the fan speed up by 600 RPM or more. Start playing WoW after 10 minutes the fans are at 6,000 RPM and the machine is HOT. I don't really notice much of a difference when I switch to Windows 7 but I don't have a temperature gauge to compare accurately.

Yeah, die shrink and Apple's in... 4860 maybe :D *not*

The 17" MBP's overheating is due to Apple fans not working properly...

I use SMCfancontrol with my macbook and in 2 clicks I can choose whatever speed I set/profiles so I can make sure my temps are always below 50C on normal stuff and *TRY* to never go over 80C on extreme abuse :D

I doubt Apple would mix NVIDIA's 9400 chip with an ATI dedicated graphics card.

Apple will do whatever will give them the highest profit margin at the right time.

It's plainly obvious why they chose ATI cards for the iMac and Mac Pro lines for the "performance" graphics option. They are cheap at the moment. ATI is pricing it very aggressively and if Apple wants to procure thousands of them for their new line of desktops then they are going to get a massive discount.

Cheap + decent performance compared to Nvidia solutions = win for Apple profits.

ATI is set to launch their new mobility graphics line soon and i think the biggest motivator for apple to change will be the price of the chip.

The high-end 24" has the HD4850 as an option in the latest refresh. It comes with a GT130 standard which is basically a rebranded 8800GS. The HD4850 only costs $50 to upgrade from the GT130, and given the large performance difference, it's probably the best $50 you'll ever spend on a Mac. Really, Apple should have never bothered offering the GT130 and just go directly with the HD4850, but I guess they had to be nice to nVidia.

It's to bad Apple couldn't have gone with the Mobility HD4670 in the MBP, since even that would have been much better than the 9600M GT.

Why? They did it in the iMac with the ATI card... it still has the same nvidia chipset... and an ATI video card. The nvidia chipset on the motherboard still allows other brands of video cards. They could go with a mobile version of something like the 4870 and it would work fine.
