Why doesn't OS X have a single good video player like KMplayer that can handle Matroska (mkv) files..
Or for that matter handle Subtitles elegantly ...
Or maybe there is something but I am just not aware of its existence
Please don't say it's VLC (even 720p playback stutters on a Unibody macbook)
Perian is somewhat better but then Subtitle support is very flaky

VLC doesn't stutter on my old Macbook during HD playback...

I typically have no problems whatsoever playing MKV's using Quicktime w/ Perian or MPlayer. For very high bit-rate 1080p content I use Plex (you can also try Boxee or any of the other projects stemming from XBMC). There are plenty of options out there. I have yet to come across a media file which I couldn't perfectly play with one of the aforementioned options. Don't limit yourself to VLC...

Make sure youre using the latest verison of vlc, they really updated their subtitle rendering, compared to the older versions. It sucked HARD before.
Though I use Plex to playback all mkv, and ones with subtitles. Never had any problems, and performance is a lot better then other programs. (based off of xbmc like chris27 suggests) -
Im not much a fan of VLC, but it should play x264 HD stuff (I assume thats the video stream in the MKV's you have - MKV is a container format, not a video format as such) on a MBP with no problems at all - my old Inspiron 6000 (1.6GHz Pentium M, 512MB RAM, ATI X300) could play 720p x264's fine. I'd definately give MPlayer a go though, its a great little player.

There not a whole lot of options for playing an MKV on a Mac, but VLC will work just fine. I wasn't able to get Perian to play an MKV for some reason.
