Assuming we don't get a refresh on the MBP including an HDMI out, is it possible to use the existing MBP's DVI out with an HDMI adapter to output video and sound?

DVI to HDMI will only pull out the VIDEO. No sound, since DVI carries no sound. For me that's fine, since my monitor doesn't do much noise anyway, with no integrated speakers. But to output to a HD TV you 'll need a second cable(audio) besides HDMI. (as someone else already stated).

Yea, you just need an optical audio cable to connect the MBP to the tv or reciever, and you'll get digital audio.
