If he has Apple Care then take it to an Apple store and let them check it out.

i know apple will replace the logic board if it completly fails, but i dont know if they replace it while its dieing. I'd say they would, but just tell him to take it into an apple store (if theres one near him), or to a apple repair place. Otherwise call them up, and do it over the phone.

Just make sure that he has a backup of his machine, incase something goes wrong during the replacement, or so he can atleast access his files incase the laptop dies.

problems with the 8600gt will definitely be covered, even out of warranty actually, call up AppleCare or go into an Apple store if you can, they should take care of it no problem, MAKE SURE TO MAKE AND APPOINTMENT at the particular store you are going to.

well, i mean, are they just going to replace it, or give him a new one? because he really does not want to have this happen again when he goes back to hungry next year (and thus no more warranty), so idk... i guess i will just go with him when he goes to the apple store (so i can tell the apple people whats up xD) so yea :p

eventually, it will happen again, depending on his usage of the computer.

If he plays a lotta games, or gpu intensive tasks, it will probably die at some point.

Theres nothing really you can do, other then possibly complain that hes going to hungary and wont be able to get it replaced, so they should give him a new one. No idea if they will, but yea.

well, is there any chance he will get a 9xxx card, i suppose, is my question, or will they never do that? i mean, he spent like $2,500 for a laptop, id expect it to remain working well for many years xD

unless he has had many major issue, i would assume they won't replace the machine with a new one, there are a lot of variables though, just check it out.

he paid $2500 for a machine with the specs he paid for, specs change, it doesn't mean he deserves the latest and greatest, but there is a chance.

the video card is soldered onto the logic board, just like many other laptops out there. you cant just unplug it, and plug in a new one.

and the new logicboard in the aluminum MBP's are nothing like the old ones, so that wouldnt possibly work either.
