With the rumored update to the MBP in June I've been thrown into a sticky situation. I need a MBP for college in the fall, however, the question is whether or not to buy the current generation MBP or hold out for the possible revision.

What really holds me back from waiting for the revision are the inevitable design flaws or oversights that crop up with new case designs. I would love to have a notebook that promises a lower operating temperature with Montivena and DDR3, however, it's the thought of having to grapple with any flaws during a college semester that scares me away from the newer units.

    My question is:

Would you rather buy the current generation MBP (which suits my needs perfectly) or wait until the revision and pick up that MBP despite any possible design flaws?

Things you need to keep in mind, one is that it's only a rumor that there will be new case designs, two it's only a rumor that new MBP will surface in June.
Don't count on new MBP's to arrive in June because that would mean Apple's product cycle for the MBP would be reduced to only 3 months.
It's always been at least 6 months between product changes/upgrades so if anything the MBP won't see an update until late fall to October.
Buy now especially if you feel the new "rumored" case designs may have flaws.
The MBP's just came out in March, what's wrong with buying now? You are nowhere near the end of the product cycle.

I wouldn't necessarily call penryn an update of the caliber that would keep them from releasing an entirely new platform to compete with new platforms in windows based systems.

I suspect there will be a nice change soon.

That's the thing...personally, for me, I would wait for the redesign to "mature" first, while the current one is proven and still great. And remember, there is no confirmation of a redesign, its only possible as there hasn't been one in so long.

Something new will always be around the corner. I recommend you buy your notebook when you need it (so in the fall), and don't look back. The MBP is a really nice machine and is more than adequate to last you through college, even if it doesn't stay the fastest piece of hardware on the market. Last Fall, apple also threw in a free iPod nano and printer with each laptop purchased as part of a back to school sale.

I'm waiting for this before I start college in the fall. I'm in the same boat as you.

Buy it when you need it and stay very far away from rumor sites. The only reason they ever get anything right is because they guess the same thing over and over until it comes true.

If the current MBP fits your needs and you need it now get it. If you do not need it until fall, wait in case there is an update, but don't put off a needed purchase.

It sounds like you can comfortably afford to wait a couple of months. I suggest you do that for two reasons:

One, if there is a redesign then you'll have two options; you can buy the new model although I agree with some here that with it (maybe) come some teething issues, or you will be able to pick up the current model discounted. When the penryn refresh was announced, I was able to pick up my SR MBP for really cheap.

Two, if a redesign does not come, then you will know for sure to get the current model with zero regrets to follow.

    Win win IMO.

Yea thats very true. If you need or want one now, there is no problem in getting one. They hold their re-sell value very very well.
