Hi, i was just wondering if there is any noise difference between the 2.2 and the 2.4 for MBPs as i would use mine for studies and games next year.

Is it acceptable noise levels in the 2.4(most interested in this, because of gameplay :)) version in class rooms? Or is it to loud?

    Thanks :)

when playing games the fans will be audible, without a doubt. But it is not to the point where it becomes excruciatingly loud. If you have the sound on you wont even be able to notice it. There shouldnt be noise dfferences between the 2 models. When using just for studies (typing notes web surfing etc) it is really quiet and in a silent room I couldnt hear anything.

And also, installing an additional 2gigs of ram doesnt increase heat and noise levels?

    Thanks!

Adding more RAM will not affect noise levels at all. It may increase heat levels slightly because RAM tends to get hot. But the difference will be minimal and you probably would not be able to notice it. Now just go and buy it already, its an awesome computer.

I haven't played any games. My MBP is dead silent unless I'm using it at night in my room, in which case I use headphones so the point becomes moot. Other than the slot-loading DVD drive, which sounds like it's eating your DVD (no, seriously), this MBP is really quiet.

yeah the first time I put in a cd I got really scared because it sounded like it was scratching the cd etc. For a high end computer I think they should have made it sound like a sexy womans voice.

Noise isn't an issue on my MBP when not gaming. I do have mine on a stand, so it has better airflow than most (and therefore the fans are lower), but they should still stay low when you aren't doing intensive operations.

The only time I hear my fans come on is when I play F.E.A.R.

This ofcouse is with both GPU and CPU on "Maximum" settings. Also I must note that even after playing with such settings for a couple hours my MBP (2.4GHz model) only gets somewhat warm and not hot.

for cooling, if you somehow make a few millimeters of airspace under the chassis you'll see temps a few degrees cooler.
On my main work area I have raised ridges which I rest the MBP on. It also means that when you spill your tea/coffee/beverage of choice it won't flow straight into the machine....

So is it normal for me to be hearing a hum when the fans are circa 2000 rpms? Its not just the sound of air blowing but its sounds like the fan itself is making a really low noise.
I had to have my first mbp switched out because the screen was malunctioning and i didn't notice that hum on it. I can only really hear it when there are no ambient noises (ie at night in my room).
..sorry don't mean to hi-jack the thread.. but i didn't want to start a new thread just for this.
