    hi,

    sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question.. but;

i shut down my (unplugged) 17" macbook pro with 3% of battery charge left.

then few seconds later (out of curiosity) i press the power button to try to start the computer up. it doesn't start up.

i thought this only occurs when the battery is fully drain only.
or does it meant to refuse to start up on battery with low charge. if anyone know, how low does it need to be before the computer refuse to start up.

    thanks

3%??? when Li-ion batteries run that low you risk DAMAGING them! I would not make a regular habit of trying to power any computer on at 3%.

    its time to recharge.

What? That article says to discharge the battery until your Macbook goes to sleep. From the sounds of it, your Macbook has gone to sleep. 3% charge probably isn't enough power to boot up the computer, which is why it's refusing to do so.
It would be a design flaw if a computer was allowed to boot up, only to run out of power halfway during the process, crash, and corrupt some boot files.

I second that. If your computer was already on with 3% of the battery left, you might be able to continue working for just a bit. but at some point (soon) the machine would have locked up. maybe at 2% or 1%, it starts writing your full ram information to your hard drive, so that when the machine runs out of battery your work won't be lost.

so obviously booting from 3% is a no go... by the time you get through the boot the thing will lock you out to save your session.

i also worried that the computer has a poorly calibrated battery and run out of juice during the shut down process. is it possible?

is it ok to run the battery this low?

The system won't turn on with a charge that low. Completely normal. Charge it up a bit, and stop worrying! :)

I think your battery is out of calibration. That's why it's still powering on when it's still have 3% of charge left. I haven't got my current MBP until a charge that low, but my previous iBook won't wake up from sleep/power up whenever the charge's way too low.

Just charge it back up and use. I don't see it as much of a problem. Just keep an eye on your battery health under the system profiler.

Dude, don't drain Li-Ion battery's that low. I did it a mere 5 times to my thinkpad's battery and it only has half heath now. Don't be dumb, charge it up. I don't see why you are so curious about this, you need to be recharging between 10 and 20% anyways so this information is irrelevant to normal use.

hmmm... okay then guys.. thanks for all the helps :)
i wonder if apple deliberately mislead us to drain the battery that low so we can replace the battery early... even their repair center is told that this is allright, as they drain my macbook's (not MBP) battery 100% and a month or two at complete discharged condition.
