Hi,
I'm thinking of changing my macpro to a MBP 15" 2.6, 200gb 7200rpm and 8600 256mb graphics.
Reason is, i would like to be portable and dont really require a high end machine like i have.
How will the MBP cope with playing games such as Battlefield 2142 and Crysis at 1600 X 1050 on an external monitor?
I know there is a new MBP on it's way in Jan, so i'll wait until then just incase they update the graphics.
Thanks for your time.

graphics will not be updated in january.
you can still wait and get whatever other benefits do come.
mbp can play battlefield 2142 at 1680x1050...
and you must be joking about crysis... try 1024x600 maybe 1280x800 with an OC, mediumish settings to medium / high depending on the res.
SLI 8800m gtx to run in 1680x1050... -
Had no idea it was that intense! I dont actually play that game but new it was a popular game.
I mainly play Battlefield 2142, Football Manager and a bit of COD 4. Oh do you think it'll be ok with Call of Duty 4?
EDIT - with 2142, will it be able to play on high settings? -
my 17" MBP can handle Source engine games very well at 1920x1200 on very high settings, the 8600GTm is a very nice GPU indeed.
and really, the only game you need to be playing anyway is Portal. ^_^ -
I don't think there is a machine in existence that can run Crysis on highest settings. That resolution is pretty high. I run Oblivion at 1280x1024 (external monitor) with bloom on instead of HDR, no grass and still only pull about 25-30fps. Of course, I have the X1600, so the 8600GT will fair better. Just remember that a notebook card is not going to perform like a desktop.

I wonder if Apple will make the 8600 in the 512mb option come Jan?

doesn't really matter. they might, but it won't change the performance in a significant way...

Im playing it now on my Macpro with 512mb card and the fans are spinning pretty loud...... Will the MBP be able to play with everything on highest setting?
EDIT 2142 i mean -

Yes, the macbook pro can play on the highest settings maxed with AA with a macbook pro with 256mb 8600 GT.
I know, I played it myself at a friend's house who has 2 macbook pros, and may give me one for my birthday. -
You can play COD4 at native res (1440x900 on 15") and it runs fairly well in sp.
But for mutiplayer, you can still play, i got to a high level on 1440, but you will obviously get more fps on a lower resolution, so I play at 1360~ now. Just a personal preference.
But yea it can play COD4, and the game looks really really good either way. -
Thanks very much for your time guys. Looks like i'll move over to the Macbook Pro then.
Will wait until Jan to see if they release a new model. They might stick a 512mb 8600 in the new one!!!! -
They "may" release an MBP with an 8800 GT/GTS, but that's really pushing the thermal designs of the current MBP chassis.
Honestly, if they release an MBP with an 8800 GT/GTS/GTX, I'll sell my current MBP in a heart beat since graphical performance is important to me.
Unfortunately, I will just have to wait for the NVidia 9600 or Nvidia G160. I don't know what numerical scheme they'll go with after they've passed 9950, but it'd probably be that generations mid-range card before Crysis could be played respectably.. Stupid game companies making games sparkle only on the 1% of the population that can afford absurdly priced graphics cards..
50 If rant completed, go to 60, if not, go to 10.
60 End
Wow, I suck at basic programming.
