People like me hate Apple. For alot of reasons. That is why people like me try to find other companies that IMO produce better products, one company I say for computers is ASUS. Anyway I have found a competitor to the MBP, and that is the ASUS W2W and The Toshiba Qusiomo, which one of the 3 would any of you guys prefer????? I do not plan on buying one but I just want a opinion. I would get the sharp W2W over the MBP any day.

    Zune VS IPOD
    Asus W2W Vs MBP
    Asus W7S VS MacBook

    I would get everything on the left hand side. :D :D :D :D :D

I would say that the Asus G1s or V1s is closest to the MBP, while a XPS 1330 or Sony SZ is pretty close to a MB.

By posting this in the Apple/Mac section, you're just enraging people for no reason. We try to stop flame wars, esp. between Windows and Mac. People, I ask of you to please ignore Wierd Al's lack of better judgment in choosing his words, and not turn this into a 90 page flamewar.

Well I am just saying there are better products then mac and just because a piece of tech has a sign with a apple bite does not mean you have to pay 30% more for it.

Depends what you're looking for. If you're looking for the most powerful notebook at the lowest cost, it won't be a Mac. But if you're looking for more features, such as LED-backlighting, an ultra-thin case, a magnetic power cord and "multi-touch" trackpad, a backlit keyboard, OS X and iLife and such, these features come at a price and this is what justifies the MBP's price.

Oh man, not one of these again.

The problem with your comparisons is you don't get Apple software with those systems. The MBP and the MB are complete solutions, with unique OS and software package. You can't legally emulate that with PCs.

That depends on the person, so you decide. It looks to me like you are looking for an MBP wannabe, which is fine. But FWIW, Asus doesn't really make better products. In fact they make the MB...

I like the Apple with the bite taken from it, especially at night at a darkened area at Starbucks! That's a good enough reason to buy a Mac notebook, don't you think, Sam? LOL

Yes, I brought my MacBook to do a Keynote (trial, can't afford it yet, as usual ) presentation at school once, and during the presentation I found half the class was staring at the glowing Apple logo on the lid of my MacBook, and the other half was staring at me clicking through my presentation with the Apple Remote :D.

    back on topic,

I considered asus, lenovo, and apple for my new computer-Apple won out
    Reasons i chose apple:
    -"vista sux"
    -hawt look
    -smoother os
-hardware specials (thinnest and lightest, backlit keyboard, etc)
    -sweet battery life
    -simple ordering process (simple everything)
-sweet discount (ie, student discount, student adc)

    that enuf?

fyi. ordered a 2.2 ghz glossy mbp on hallow's eve :D

Are you kidding me? When you said the Zune is superior to the iPod you just lost all credibility. I own PCs like no other, and have still not jumped ship. But the Zune is a POS.

Back to the subject of Asus. I would never touch an Asus ever again. Their support site is down almost constantly, their servers are terrible, and when your trying to download drivers you either get 10 kb/s or dropped connections. My Asus A8jp that I owned had the worst screen in existence, the worst touchpad in existence, and the worst ATI driver support in existence (OK, AMD is partly to blame for this one). Asus design is generally speaking terrible, (Think G series). Theres nothing Asus has on any of the other PC makers really, I would take an HP/Compaq or Lenovo over it any day.

So that's strike 2 for you buddy. (Giving Zune credit and picking Asus).

Strike 3 was long coming when you started this thread in the Apple forums claiming a "MBP competitor". When has Apple been selling enough notebooks in such a rampant manner that you need to start attacking it and calling for a competitor? By your motives, you are almost ADMITTING to the superiority of the MBP?

A perplexing thread by all accounts, but probably just one designed to incite furor by no significantly well thought out means.

Edit: I just realized I called out simonfzhao's Asus as hideous, but truth be told, not feeling too guilty since he's here on the Apple forums which by definition is 50% about design over substance. ^_^

Alright. I am a huge PC man, and my friends and I argue over what is better (Mac vs. PC) at lunch.

Okay, here it is. With PC Laptops, if you want to lug around something heavy, but need the speed, PC is for you. And also, if your doing buisness, or just don't have the money for the MBP.

With Macs. You get a very stylish laptop (there are others out there). And you pay a premium for an OS that has been specifically designed for that Laptop.

    ITS ALL OPINION.

Just end this stupid thread. Macs are better in some cases (I love the 1" of the MBP). But PC's also have their perks (lower price, 17" monsters :) )

    End...

Oh, I think one reason why people don't like the zune too much is that everyone is so familiar with Itunes that they don't really want to switch, and the Ipod does look damn good. My friend has a touch and a 80GB, and I have a nano.

    Final end...

    What are you people on?

    CANDIED apples?

    They taste HORRIBLE!

I mean seriously - they're sticky, and they make a huge mess!

    Think of all that SUGAR!

Why ruin a perfectly good fruit by pouring oversweetened sticky syrupy stuff over it?

This applies to all sorts of syrup, candied, caramel apples in general!

Some people just have no taste in their fruits :(

When I saw the title of this thread I tought that I found a good thread about something I'm searching long time now: laptop similar to MBP, but for windows. Wrong. WeirdAl started this to bash Apple. :p

Seriously, point me in direction where I can find this kind of laptop:

    1. Excellent build (brushed aluminium case, carbon fiber or other non-plastic material)

    2. 15.4" with 2.45kg weight

    3. LED backlit display (after Sony SZ I realized I don't wanna go back to CCL)

    4. 8600GT gfx with 256MB RAM

    5. Backlit keyboard

WeirdAl, these characteristics may be unimportant to you, but they are important to me. So far, I haven't found anything close to MBP. Prove me I'm wrong.

I have to admit, I'm rather looking for the same thing. I honestly don't care about OSX etc... but at this very moment, I've not found a better source of aesthetically pleasing power than the MBP. Its thin, light, has the LED backlit screen, a relatively powerful gfx card (8600? Wonder if it will soon become 8700), etc... and aside from the Asus W2W on the 17 inch model, I've not founnd anything to match it. Asus offers the current V series, which looks a lot "cheaper" and more businesslike. The U3S is pretty, but only includes an 8400G graphics card (if they had one with an 8600/8700, I'd say its a competitor for the MBP).

I want power, I want shininess. Is the MBP the only thing these days hat combines them both?

    Power, check. Shiny, Check!

Computer religions are counter productive. Hating Apple is pointless. They're just a machine design company who the sell said machines.

As a lifelong PC user (20+ years) I have also sold all kinds of computers (and other tech pieces)
Among the nicest computers I sold were the A's.
That is, Apple, Asus and Acer. Acer really are the king of value for money, everything included and (at least in my country) excellent warranty service.
    Ditto Asus.
Apple are the kings of design, not cost effectiveness.

I bough a MBP because I wanted one, and didn't want Vista, which needs at least a year more to mature.

Other PC manufacturers just don't get my juices flowing (usually), although Dell with Ubuntu looks good (I run Ubuntu on the wifes desktop, so nice).

Buy your Asus, it's probably really nice. Try out the Macs as well. They're also really nice. You do however (almost) get what you pay for. The overpriced MBP does stuff out of the box that all computers should, but can't. That's one of the things you pay for.
As for stability, my MBP has locked up.
    Once.
    In six months.

    Candied apples??
    You sick puppies!
I tried those when I was in the States last year. The first bite....mmmmmm
The second bite......Am I getting instant diabetes?? OMFG -shake-shake-droptothegroundinconvulsions-
    Well, almost.
But a BIT too sweet, IMO.

The three biggest caveats I have with the MBP are price, size, and lack of compatibility with with a few Windows designed applications and Windows based hardware devices. Price of course can be argued that you're getting a lot for your money based on the software alone with OS X and iLife but then again I was able to purchase a Dell m1330 for almost half the price of a similarly configured 15.4" MBP. Granted the MBP has an 8600M GT vs the 8400M GT, a backlit keyboard, better case quality, and a couple of other nice features but the m1330 does have a few advantages in being smaller, lighter, better battery life, arguably better LED backlit displays and HDMI out.

Size is important to me and after using a 12.1" and 13.3" XPS laptop I'd like to see Apple hurry up and release a 13.3" MBP with a decent graphics card in it. That might be the one thing that would sell me into buying a MBP since I do like all of the features OS X Leopard brings to the table. The OS and included software would be the only reason I would switch though as the MBP has no hardware advancements that make it worth nearly 2x as much as similarly configured competitor laptops can be had for.

Was there a sale or did you receive a discount on the Dell? I configured the dell XPS M1330 about five minutes ago and it came out to $1699.00. The specs are similar to a MBP 2.2 15.4 that sells for $1999.00. Some online stores have $150 rebates so that brings down the price lower. With the student discount, the MBP 15.4 2.2 is $1799.00.

Price only does not seem to be a real factor these days with comparably spec'd machines. Will the windows apps you need or want..run in bootcamp?

Here's a thought, WE WANT TO USE OS X! READ OUR POSTS. Why do you Windows users alway feel like you can solve our computer buying decisions by offering products of a lower cost like it's the only way to go. Take your own advice but don't dish it out here. :p

I've bought cheap products in the past, and regret doing that. Next time I won't be saving money, but I will be netting on nice MBP. I am also in the market for a new phone as well, and am tired of my crappy Zune. Seriously, the Zune has no accessible clock, and you cannot seek! What kind of product is that?

I actually got in on a great deal through a student discount pricing when the m1330 was first released and I ended up paying around $1400 or less on two different m1330's of the same config. The second one got delayed quite a while so I got another $100 discount and a $50 coupon from Dell. Both laptops were configured with a 3 year warranty and complete care.

There are rarely any deals on the MBP. Unless your currently a college student you're unlikely to get any kind of real discount on one. XPS discounts like the one I got do come around from time to time. The MBP does have a more powerful GPU, no argument there. It also does have a larger screen but being that it's a 15.4" it ought to at least come with a 1680x1050 resolution screen instead of only 1440x900. 15.4" ThinkPads come with the option of 1680x1050 and 1920x1200.

I wouldn't mind having a MBP if the price was right because of OS X but i'd either want a higher resolution screen for the 15.4" or more importantly a smaller 13.3" MBP.
