    Hello everybody!

My Macbook Pro (SR version about 11 months old) has a problem, whenever I insert any DVD it moves the dvd inside about 30 seconds and then ejects it. No DVD works. I tried DVD movies, original Leopard and Tiger install disks and a few others. The DVDs work on other laptops. I tried inserting DVDs in OSX 10.5.4, Windows (bootcamp) and during startup. Always the same. Makes a noise similar as during eject and then after a few seconds it gets ejected.

CDs work. Including buring CDs. It is only DVDs with the problem.
What can I do? Send it to Apple? Any ideas?

    Thanks for your help!

Dunno much about MACs but check if you need to set a DVD region for the optical drive....

Not sure how to do that in OSX too. I booted in Windows XP and it is set to region 2 which I think is right for Germany.

Region 2 is most of Europe, Japan, and some other places.

But it sounds like your drive is bad and you need to have it replaced. Its still under warranty? If not you're better off looking at other options to replace it.

Yeah I got 3 years applecare so they should cover it. Just strange that CDs work without problems. I found some discussions online about older macbooks having similar problems after firmware upgrades. But nothing for the drive I got.

Most drives (DVD players included) have two lasers. One for CD and one for DVD. It's not uncommon for one to go bad while the other is good.

In the past, cheaper drives and DVD players had one laser that would just get refocused depending on the disc. But these days almost everything has separate lasers for separate discs.

Call Apple. They should replace it.
