So, what could be causing the bottom third yellow tint issue present on some of the new LED MacBook Pros? Has this happened to other LED backlit models from other companies? Was there ever some sort of community consensus as to what the problem was/is?

As far as I could figure it out, it must be because of the heat. All the heat is underneath the display and if you actually touch the bottom third of the LCD, you'll feel it quite hot, especially after gaming.

I've never had the yellow tinting problem, but I figure that's where it comes from. I could also be wrong...

I think its mostly due to new technology. First LED display of that size I think. First batch of a factory had problems had problem.

There hasn't been any real resolution to the problem. People has just either been dealing with it or returning MBPs 2-3 times until they are satisfied with the screen they get. Everything so far, in terms of what is causing the problem has been speculation or guesswork. It obviously hasn't been acknowledged by Apple.

A couple people have posted saying that it was an issue with the first batch of screens but some recent buyers with newer manufacturer dates have also experienced the problem.

Updated test image to detect yellowing of screen:

    http://henhowc.bol.ucla.edu/test_3.jpg

    1. Save file to desktop
    2. Hide Dock
    3. Open it up with Preview
    4. Zoom to fit
    5. Adjust the image size and placement so that the rectangles run along both the top and bottom of the screen.
    6. View the image STRAIGHT ON.

To prove that this image isn't doctored, you can see the transition from white to yellowish (IF you have the issue) by dragging the image downward so that the top rectangle is located in the area where the bottom rectangle was.

If I see one more post from someone asking about yellowing due to viewing angles...

Here are my attempts to show the illustrate the issue with my crappy digital cam and poor photo taking abilities

It looks normal to me... could be the white balance of my monitor. Can you try adjusting the white balance on yours?

It could also depend on the lighting conditions I guess... some whites look more bluish or yellowish depending on environment conditions.

Nope...calibrating the screen does nothing. Its very hard to capture in pictures. On a LCD with no problems, you should see both rectangles as white. In my photo above, the top rectangle is white whereas the rectangle on the bottom has a yellowish hue to it. Some people might think it so subtle as to be a non-issue.

When I get the chance, I think I'll take a photo of my CD MBP to try and illustrate the difference in color uniformity.

I can see the bottom left of the screen being a tiny teeny bit more yellow than the rest.
    - Happens with my custom Color Sync profile and with the Color LCD one.
    - Bottom right looks slightly better
    - Doesn't depend on viewing angles - I viewed this from all angles and this is definitely some real yellow-ish hue

The effect is extremely subtle. I have not noticed this prior to reading this thread so I guess I can live with it just fine. I suppose that's just a consequence of using LED technology for the screen.

If it should get worse I will replace the screen, if not, I guess I can live with it.

I checked mine too and I could also see some yellowish on the bottom white line, but I really had to concentrate and even then the difference (between the top and the bottom) white was minimal.

I just checked mine. I could tell that the bottom white line looked a bit different from the top white line, but I couldn't actually see any yellow.

How do I know that it's not just the lighting in the room or something?

This is an I yawn, you yawn reaction. If I stare at anything long enough I can see what I believe im looking for.

Honestly, if this is so subtle you have to massively concentrate to believe you see it, is there really an issue?

If you do have a yellow screen, the bottom white box is darker darker than than the top white box.

That's not even noticeable unless you're actually looking for it.

If you can't see it then good for you. Either you don't have an issue at all or you aren't as anal-retentive as some of the rest of us. Whichever the answer is, you're probably better off regardless haha :)

That being said, I still think its an issue as a decent amount of people have reported similar. Pictures don't really capture it all that well. I'd try and take more shots but I already sent it back to Apple.

Well I could see it, but just barely. And I had to concentrate really hard.
