I just recently de partitioned my boot camp and made it all one OS X partition. Ever since I did that whenever I start up my Mac I get a black screen saying this: "No bootable device -- Insert boot device and press any key." Pressing any key does nothing. In order to actually boot up the computer properly I have to hold down the "option" key as if I were going to choose which partition to boot from on Boot Camp and then select OS X (It's the only choice available). What do I do in order to stop getting this error when I boot up? I've checked that the startup disc is OS X.

I was going to say, check to make sure that OS X is the default startup disc.

How did you go about deleting your Windows partition? Using the Boot Camp Assistant again? The only thing I can think of is that you erased the contents of the partition, not the partition itself. But it seems like you know what you're doing.

Yeah I erased the partition through Boot Camp assistant. I've looked in the disc utility to see if the partition actually did not get deleted but it seems like it did. I don't really know what to do. It's more of an annoyance than anything because I can still boot up but I'd just like to not be able to have to hold down "option" every time.

I'm gonna try the first aid option from the utility. Hopefully that'll help, even though I have my doubts.

Just ran the verification of the disc and it says everything appears to be OK. I'm at a loss for what to do. Any help is appreciated.

I'm going to get fully into BootCamp in a few weeks, but if I recall correctly from my reading in the recent past isn't there an option in BootCamp utilities or something where one can select which of the partitions is the default for bootup when you don't press the option key on cold start? If so, could you go into that and reselect the OSX partition as the default (maybe that would fix the problem)?

It sounds like the MBP is working on the assumption that it should be using the Bootcamp partition as the default (and doesn't know that it was removed), and when it can't find it this gives you the error message about the absent bootable device. This could also explain why your bootup proceeds normally when you use the Option key procedure.

Make sure you've set a default Start Up disk in:

System Prefs > Start Up Disk

    I've set the startup disc.
